LOS ANGELES - Republican Bill Simon sought to quell a roiling controversy that has swamped his campaign for governor by publicly voicing ``regret'' Thursday for falsely accusing Gov. Gray Davis of illegally accepting a campaign contribution in the state Capitol.

Davis's people are sure getting a lot of milage out of this, with the media helping him. More proof that a Republican better be smart and on the ball, which Simon isn't. I can't imagine this happening to Riordan.
Please! Riordan made more flubs than anyone in the primary! He's a buffoon! He wouldn't be doing any better than Simon, and probably worse!
Simon is doing OK. He's made mistakes, but he's holding his own. We have three weeks. This issue isn't going to stick. Why? Because Gray Davis has a major ethics problem and one misstep by Simon isn't going to erase the years of pay-to-play bribes, corruption, and scandal.
Go Simon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got news for you, pal -- if Riordan wasn't so short on ideas and long on "Yeah, me too" talk, Simon would never have been nominated.
The former L.A. mayor, married to a Demo activist, who accepted the designation "Honorary Democrat" at the Demo Convention in 2000, who graciously gave disgraced ex-con Clintonoid Webster Hubbell a seven-figure "consulting" position upon his release, and who chose former Demo Party chair Roy Romer to be his superintendent of schools, had ample opportunity to distinguish himself as something even close to conservative. He couldn't do it, because he's not.
You might as well spell Riordan's name "Iordan," because the "R" next to his name is meaningless.
Simon, given the chance after conservatives sought an alternative, gave straight answers (which by comparison with previous GOP candidates, seemed almost daring) and drew a clear contrast to Davis policies. Bill Jones, a political veteran and the only GOPper to win a major election in California in the past six years, might have made a better candidate when all is said and done, but he doesn't have much of a record to run on. Plus, he alienated a lot of Republicans in 2000 when he started backing Demo darling McCain in that brief moment when he was The Man.
Until I get answers to those questions, I will think that the Davis camp -- and Bob Mulholland in particular -- had something to do with this whole deal.
Wow, what a hatchet job. I can't believe the media is trying so hard to bury Simon. Do they really want four more years of Gray Davis?
