September 11 suspect arrested in Germany

A Moroccan man has been arrested in Hamburg on suspicion he provided logistical support to the September 11 hijackers led by Mohamed Atta.

Abdelghani Mzoudi, 29, had close and long-standing contacts with the members of the cell, and had attended training camps in Afghanistan during the summer of 2000, the prosecutors said.

Mzoudi once lived in an apartment with Zakariya Essabar and Ramzi Binalshibh, two other suspected members of the Hamburg terrorist cell.

Binalshibh is now in US custody while Essabar remains at large.

Atta also lived in the apartment at one point, but had moved out by the time Mzoudi moved in on September 1, 1999.

Prosecutors claim Mzoudi was in particularly close contact with Essabar and with Mounir el Motassadeq, the only other person being held in Germany in connection with the September 11 attacks.

El Motassadeq, who is alleged to have helped the three with logistics leading up to the attacks, is due to go on trial in Hamburg on October 22.

Mzoudi "was aware of the aim of the group to commit terrorist attacks and supported it logistically," the prosecutors' statement said.

Around the end of 2000, he made money available to Essabar to finance his planned flight training in the United States.

Mzoudi, who is accused of supporting a terrorist organization, has been under investigation since October 25 last year.

Germany Arrests Man for 9/11 Ties

By GEIR MOULSON Associated Press Writer

BERLIN, Oct 10, 2002 (AP Online via COMTEX) -- German authorities arrested a Moroccan man Thursday on suspicion that he provided logistical support to the Hamburg cell of Sept. 11 plotters led by suspected ringleader Mohamed Atta, federal prosecutors said.

Abdelghani Mzoudi, 29, had close contacts over several years with members of the cell, which included two other Sept. 11 hijackers - Marwan al-Shehhi and Ziad Jarrah - and attended training camps in Afghanistan in the summer of 2000, according to a statement from prosecutors.

Mzoudi, the second person to be arrested in Germany in connection with the attacks, once lived in a Hamburg apartment with Zakariya Essabar and Ramzi Binalshibh, two other suspected members of the cell. Binalshibh is now in U.S. custody while Essabar remains at large.

Atta also lived in the apartment at one time, but had moved out by the time Mzoudi moved in on Sept. 1, 1999, authorities have said.

Prosecutors said that Mzoudi was in particularly close contact with Essabar and with Mounir el Motassadeq, the only other person being held in Germany in connection with the Sept. 11 attacks, and that they were in Afghanistan at the same time.

El Motassadeq, who is alleged to have helped Atta and the other hijackers with logistics leading up to the attacks, is set to go on trial in Hamburg Oct. 22.

Mzoudi, who was arrested in Hamburg, "was aware of the aim of the group to commit terrorist attacks and supported it logistically," the prosecutors' statement said.

Around the end of 2000, he made money available to Essabar to finance his planned flight training in the United States, it added.

Chief federal prosecutor Kay Nehm has said Binalshibh was foreseen as the fourth Sept. 11 pilot, but was unable to get a U.S. visa. Essabar was nominated to replace him, but also failed to get a visa.

In their stead, Zacarias Moussaoui flew to the United States in February 2001, Nehm said. He was arrested the following August after a flight school became suspicious, and is on trial in Virginia on charges of conspiracy to commit terrorism and murder federal employees.

Atta, Jarrah and al-Shehhi departed for the United States in mid-2000 to begin flight training at schools in Florida.

Prosecutors said Mzoudi helped "cover up al-Shehhi's whereabouts," finding a room in a student residence for his final weeks in Germany before he left for the United States in May 2000.

Hamburg police have said that a video of suspected cell member Said Bahaji's wedding, which authorities have cited previously, showed both Mzoudi and Atta, indicating the men had contact with one another. Bahaji disappeared days before the attacks and German authorities have issued a warrant for his arrest.

Mzoudi, who is accused of supporting a terrorist organization, has been under investigation since Oct. 25 last year, prosecutors said.

He was questioned in July, when prosecutors said he and seven other men had formed an Islamic fundamentalist group with the aim of carrying out attacks. Authorities said that raids then didn't turn up enough evidence to hold the men.

Prosecutors said Thursday that Mzoudi was arrested as a result of "complex investigations and a witness statement that emerged only this summer on his stay in Afghanistan."

I wonder if Essabar is now with the other al Qaeda people, wherever they are.
