-- If You Dare!
Perplexed by politicians, mixed-up by the media? Ask Marni-Rebecca, if you dare. She can clear things up for you. One caveat though -- asking her romantic advice is like asking the captain of the Titanic how to navigate.

Dear Ms. Malarkey,
Did you know that it's Diversity Awareness Month? What do you think about that? I think it's just a lot of politically correct hooey and you seem like a sensible woman who would agree with me about that. Keep up the good work,
Urja in Minneapolis
Marni-Rebecca Replies......
Dear Urja,
Yes, I know that it's Diversity Awareness Month. In fact, I have it highlighted on my calendar.
October is the month when we say to the different groups and individuals with whom we share our community, "Diverse people of my community, I am aware of you. I am aware that while you may not believe the same things I believe, and that while you may not look like me, or wear the same clothes as me, you are every bit as valid and worthwhile as I am. I respect your culture. I validate your beliefs. I see you as an equal, a valuable contributor to my world. I do not feel the fact that I am part of the white Christian majority in this country makes me any better than you. Hello, Mister VooDoo man. I respect your beliefs. I believe they are as worthwhile and acceptable as mine. I believe that the VooDoo doll you are holding is no different from my hymnal or rosary beads. I believe I have a lot to learn from your spells and black magic. Hello Ms. Satan Worshipper. I support your right to worship Satan, because worshipping Satan is really no different from worshipping God. People who are frightened of your beliefs are only showing their own ignorance and their own feelings of entitlement and positions of privilege. And I believe VooDoo Day and Satan Day should all be celebrated in our schools and homes the same way Christmas and Hanukkah are. And that goes for every other holiday as well..." And so forth. That is what Diversity Awareness Month is all about.
And yes Urja, I think it's a lot of hooey, politically correct or otherwise. Don't get me wrong. I firmly believe in open immigration and I firmly believe that people have the right in their own homes and places of worship to practice what they wish -- provided they don't sacrifice animals or anything. And I hope that everyone teaches their children to respect other people's faiths and backgrounds. But I think the whole concept of having a "Diversity Awareness Month" is absurd, because I believe that places like Canada and the United States, are, by their very nature, aware and indeed, welcoming of diversity. It's written into your Constitution and our Charter of Rights. That is what we are made of. That is what we are about. We were founded on people coming from other places to make a life here, and that is what keeps us growing and open...............
