Gee..., this device adds a quantum leap to the "conventional wisdom" of "SPRAY AND PRAY"! Do a little research concerning the number of rounds expended per casualty over the past 100 years!

One shot... one kill seems to be equivalent to a 900AD sword stroke slogan today!

It will fire 180 rounds in the blink of the eye, but to fire 181 rounds, the thing has to be shipped back to the factory.

There could be some truly interesting, one-time, special uses such as close in anti-aircraft or anti-missle protection, but in the field I would take an M-2 Browning any day.

Sound incredibly impractical, given magazine and reloading parameters.

There's nowhere to feasibly store enough rounds for it before ammo supply was completely exhausted.

Don't be too quick to knock Metal Storm. An article posted on FR several months ago talked about the Defense Department's main reason for canceling the "Crusader" weapon system was the near availability of Metal Storm technology. My moto is don't bet against Rumsfeld"....so I bought some stock!

I suggest you all go to MetalStorm.com and click on Technical Demonstrations on left hand side of the page. Select 36 Barrel prototype and choose the streaming video demo.

This will give you a look at the fantastic ways this weapon system can be configured. It is truly revolutionary. Their founder is in Australia, but the Pres. and COO is a retired US Navy Admiral with offices in Virginia - very handy to DOD. I have talked with some people in this office and without going too far out on a limb, it sounds like they have their act torgether. Who knows, we may have a beta test site soon....

The stock has fallen recently and I think represents a very good speculative buy at about $6.25. Symbol of the ADR which trades on the NASDAQ is MTSX. Again, I own this stock and am not a broker....so do your own home work before buying any!!

>>>If you miss the first shot, will you miss your remaining shots?<<<

No, easch shot is electronically triggered. You can do it single shot, 2,4,7, 125,000 at a burst. All depends on how many barrels you have and how many shells per barrel. ,p> Go to metalstorm.com and look at technical demos.

Picture a box. In the box are stacks of barrels - 8 or 12 barrels to a stack. Now fill the box with stacks side by side. So now you have 64 or 144 barrels in the box.

Each barrel has, let just say. 12 rounds in it - nose to tail in the barrel - but each is individually addressable by the firing computer.

To reload, you put in new stacks of barrels.

Does that help? Go to metalstorm.com for a zoowie technical demonstration.

WASHINGTON, May 12 (UPI) -- EXCLUSIVE A new ballistic technology that can fire burst rates in excess of one million rounds per minute from a 36-barrel weapon was one of the reasons Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld canceled the $11 billion Crusader artillery system. The technology is known as "Metal Storm," which is also the name of the Australian research and development company that owns it. The fastest weapons today are mechanical Gatling gun styles that can fire at the rate of some 6,000 rounds per minute. Infantry rifles average 600 rounds, which is the firing rate for a magazine of...

Metal Storm: Ultimate Killing Machine? {13 million rounds a minute}

Metal Storm: Ultimate Killing Machine? New gun tech could result in weapon that fires up to a million rounds per minute. By Gary Nurenberg, Tech Live January 14, 2002 Most guns fire by mechanically moving bullets into a chamber, one at a time. While gun designers have developed ways to speed up this process, there has always been a theoretical limit to how fast a gun can mechanically load. One of the Navy's fastest rapid-fire artillery guns, the Phalanx, uses a single-chamber design and can fire thousands of rounds per minute. But now, an Australian company called Metal Storm says ...

ULTIMATE FIREPOWER With no moving parts, Metal Storm weapons can lay down a million-plus rounds per minute. BY SCOTT GOURLEY Illustrations by Paul DiMare An all-electronic firing control mechanism is easily adapted to include a fingerprint-based user-ID system, and an on-the-fly selection of different rounds for different situations. To the human ear, the sound of 180 bullets being fired in less than one-hundredth of a second is perceived as one enormous noise. And the fact that some people have heard that noise is testimony to the perseverance of one inventor with a unique vision of the future of weapons ...

SYDNEY, Australia -- It may not be ready for George Bush's "first war of the 21st century." But it may well be ready if there's a second. In perhaps the most audacious upgrade of high-speed weaponry since the introduction of the Gatling Gun, Australian inventor Mike O'Dwyer has developed a machine gun that can fire bullets at a rate of 1 million rounds per minute. Firepower like this is causing the U.S. and Australian militaries to sit up and take notice. Both are funding deeper research into O'Dwyer's ideas, which he cooked up in his garage during more than a ...

It doesn't sound like the technology is all that workable. And how many bullets do you need to direct at any given target anyway? Since all the rounds leave the barrel within a split second of each other, they should all strike nearly the same point. How dead do you need to make something?

that gave us a maximum firing rate of 1.62 million rounds per minute," the inventor says.

Sounds like that might be a bit excessive.

Did I fire 999,999 rounds or was it 1,000,000?

This version is impractical for a number of reasons, the first being that you have to replace the barrel to reload.

Uh sounds extremely practical to me as a close in anti missle or air defence weapon. Your launcher would just replace the spent barrels like they reload missles.

Indeed it does... if it can actually avoid chain-fire explosions. A bursting barrel is no picnic, and this thing has a barrel full of projectiles and propellant charges, all sitting neatly in a line.

I just don't see where the thing is practical as a sidearm. Replacing the barrel at each reload would be unacceptable in many countries, as it is the barrel which is the registered, serial numbered part. In the U.S., the idea of a "throwaway" barrel would drive BATF absolutely crazy, and the FBI ballistics lab, too. Therefore, this would definitely be a police/military firearm.

I wonder if the charges at the rear of the barrel are a bit lighter than those up front, to provide a consistent muzzle velocity (the last shot would theoretically benefit from a longer barrel than did the first shot).
