If I sought to control Persia, if not govern it, but to control it, I might seek a situation whereby I could close in from both sides.
Historically, you would either come through the Afghan mountains or up from the Middle East, via Iraq.
If we take Iraq (okay, when we take Iraq) where does that leave Iran?
U.S. controls the East. U.S. Controls the West.
That would then be two of the three members of the Axis of Evil.
Or can't you think that far ahead? Why would you take on Iran when you already have Iraq by the short, curly ones?

I think Iran is more trouble to the US and the world. Hence, I would use our resources to neutralize these fanatics. Our enemies are fanatic Moslems not followers of a dictator!
