how hard would it be to outlaw midterm party switching?

At the very least, a mid-term party switch should trigger a special election back home, to insure that your constituents approve of your move. IIRC, Phil Gramm did this when he switched to the GOP. The time and effort involved in such a process might serve as an effective deterrent to party-switching.

The thing that rankled me the most about Jeffords' switch was that less than half a year earlier he used GOP money and resources to fund his own re-election, and perpetrated fraud upon his electorate by running as a Republican.

Hey, don't try to use reason or show things in their context, it gets in the way of kneejerk responses. Good post.

They're noisy eunuchs.

They'd have you believe that Kyl, Inhofe, Gramm, Cochran, Santorum, Grassley, Allard, Enzi, Nickels, Hutchinson, Sessions, Roberts, Bunning etc. etc. etc. are all RINOs. These guys are just white noise around here.

Sitting around all day "yanking it". "I'm the true conservatinve, ohh ahhhh ahhhh ...."

The facts are smiple for Missouri Voters, do we let the dead of St Louis vote offen and even late?

One look at the past where Govenor Bob Holden and US Senator The Widow Charnahan were elected to public office, says one thing.

It is time for VOTERS from the rest of the state to put an end to St Louis making our votes meaningless!

Please bear in mind that I AM NOT happy with the fact that the widder Carnahan is holding down a seat in the US Senate.

Unfortunately here being there is not inconsistent with the Missouri State Statutes as apllied to the election.
The short version is that in Missouri if a candidate dies within 4 weeks of an election his name remains on the ballot and the Governor has the power to appoint a person to hold that seat until the next regulary scheduled election.
Therefore I am forced to conclude that the widders place in the Seante is legal.

Now if you want to talk fraudulent voting you might have something there, thats for sure.

The democrats are always trying to claim the Republicans are fascist. However, if the democrats were honest with themselves, they would admit they (the democrats) are the real fascists.

It is axiomatic that Democrats are always guilty in spades of all the things they accuse Republicans of.

Didn't control of the committees pass to the Democrats almost immediately after Jeffords jumped? How would this situation be any different?

I heard Michael Medved say today that every Kennedy relation that was running this time lost.

Not quite. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Bobby's son running for MD governor, managed to win her primary. She got about 80% of the vote. Her primary opponent, who spent practically nothing and was totally unknown, got about 20% of the vote.

What should Lott do?

One BIG thing he could do: At least PRETEND to have a brass set when he's on TV. As it is, I turn him off when he comes on. His mealy mouthed weak kneed talk makes me shout at the screen, something I don't do even when Dems come on.

Conservative? I don't think so, but time will allow your view to be tested, I expect we will do fairly well come November.

Being a Southeast Missouri voter, I am sick and tired of having my 1 legitimate vote overran by the walking dead voters of St. Louis ... the only solution is a total purging of the voter rolls and a complete re-registration of all eligible voters... until then, the Democrats will keep their grip on Missouri...

Lott receives unfair treatment around here, IMO.

That's because many of the "RINO" screamers around here won't be happy until there are 99 Liberal and Conservative DemocRATs in the Senate and only Pat Buchanan, representing the Racist Party on the other side of the isle.

I know it's hard to believe but typical Americans like some Conservative and some Liberal ideas...

A deceased individual cannot recieve legal votes in an election. Thus, all of Mel Carnahan's votes were null and void when they were counted and John Ashcroft won by a very large margin. Senator Ashcroft, however, gave in to the voters will and refused to push forward the legal case he surely would have won and that allowed the Governor to select who would serve in the Senate until the next regular State election. The Senate could have refused to seat her on two grounds.

First, the seat was legitimately won by John Ashcroft.

Second, the acting Governor had promised to appoint her prior to the election which is in violation of election laws.

Neither issue caused the Senate to refuse her, and she was sworn in as a new Senator.

The term "conservative" has been stolen and corrupted by fringe goofballs around here. There are 43 Conservative GOP Senators in the U.S. Senate right now. There are 0 Democrat Conservatives. The GOP is the place where people of good faith work for Conservative political objectives.

It was, is, and shall be the place.

To the self-syled "True Conservatives", nobody who is in a political position to actually weild the power to effect ideological priorites through legislation or implemented policy could possibly be pure enough to be labelled a "Conservative". They're con-men malcontents here. They've cultivated a brotherhood of whining losers crying and sharing seige and principled powerlessness.

They were just mildly annoying pissants before 9-11-01, but now this ongoing selfish cynicism is nothing short of contemptable.

Oh please! This was the same dress wearer who when the members of the House put there careers on the line to impeach Clinton FOR VALID CRIMES, he told Henry Hyde, "Henry, your not going to dump this garbage on me?" Trent Lott is a spineless coward who will not defend his party against any slander.

I am afraid that this is a subject that we may have to agree to disagree on. I take no comfort in the fact that the widder is in the Senate, however the election was conducted in concordance with the Statutes of the state of Misssouri. The one possible exception would be then Govenor Wilson stating that he would appoint the widder to the seat if her husband won the election.
It is posible that there might have been a legal case there but had the pubbies fought her seating on those grounds they would have been pilloried in the press.

Wanna talk vote fraud and I'm with you on that issue but not on the widders being seated according to the duly constituted laws of the state of MIsssouri.
