This is TOTALLY an opinion and not based on ANY facts, but I think there might be a little "October surprise" in the works that has nothing to do with Iraq -- my hunch is news on the Marc Rich pardon that isn't good for democrats.

from the article:

"But with all these donations, the G&P Foundation -- which claimed revenues in 2000 of over $3 million -- only gave grants for cancer research that year totaling $600,000. There were four for $25,000 apiece; six ranging from $56,000 to $66,000, and one for $132,000.

Curious, no?

"The largest donor was Dr. Daniel Vasella, chairman of Novartis, who happened to be the honoree at the G&P 2000 Angel Ball. He gave 325,000. Other donors of note included ImClone's now controversial Sam Waskal as well as the head of Bristol Myers, the pharmaceutical giant that was rushing development of Waskal's cancer drug."

Man, the big drug honchos really knew how to grease palms back then...

Marc Rich, along with former Global Crossing CEO Gary Winnick, is listed as a major contributor to "BirthRight Israel" a charity which provides young adults with free ten day trips to Israel. Reports are that Rich has given in excess of $200 million to Israel. Winnick, whose shareholder's lost over $12 billion, is chipping in $40 million for a "Museum of Tolerance" in Jerusalem.
