How about some sort of warning signal when the ignition is shut off and the child safety seat is still hooked up with a child in it (pressure sensor, perhaps?). It's certainly technologically possible, it would just require industry standards.

I'm sure it's under development now, though I can't say why I'm sure of that. The safety requirements for such a thing are rigorous, given the liability issues. (We might think it's easy, but once it exists, it had dang well never give a false negative, or the lawsuits would be staggering -"but your honor, the car didn't beep at me when I left baby in there... it's not my fault!! Blame [insert auto manufacturer's name here]!")
