MONTOUR FALLS (NY) -- Village officials' plans to put a series of lighted flags at a popular tourist spot has drawn criticism in the community.

Members of the Catharine Valley Trail project and some residents have voiced concerns about the village's plan to create an Avenue of Flags, 24 American flags in Shequaga Park that will salute fallen firefighters. They believe the flags will interfere with the path of the trail project.

Notice a few things about this article:

First, the headline says the flag "irks community," as if the plan is opposed by the entire village or nearly the entire village.

The article itself, however, notes that "some residents have voiced concerns" about the plan and, in fact supporters of the plan have raised approximately $11,000.00

That hardly sounds like an "irk(ed) community" to me. Typical media bias in headline writing.

Members of the Catharine Valley Trail project...believe the flags will interfere with the path of the trail project...The Avenue of Flags jeopardizes funding because it conflicts with the plans developed for the trail... Plans for the trail at Shequaga Falls include an elevated observation deck, a stone facade on the retaining wall across the basin of the falls, and possibly gas lamps to create a more natural appearance...."

Translation: a group of socialist land grabbers are at work.

Part of my concern is that there will be 24 lighted American flags at a premier tourist site in the village....It's a stop for tour buses, carrying passengers from other countries. I'm afraid it sends a strong message that might be misinterpreted....

In YOUR case I'm sure that patriotism or anything remotely pro-American is always "the wrong message"

NOT his real name ;-)

One notes that the trail project is government funded, while
the flag project fund raisers were all community based on raffles, chicken BBQ's and personal donations.

Also I note that the flag project does not in any way endanger funding or completion of the trail.

How close to Ithaca is this place? (/sarcasm)

What a jackass! (whomever said this).

Why, the PRECISE reason tourists from foreign countries go overseas is to GO TO ANOTHER COUNTRY. Being in another country and seeing the flag of that place highlights the foreign experience. I don't know of one Asian or Asian tour bus that would not have most of it's members getting out to take photos of the American flags there as a backdrop, for further 'effect' that they are/were in America!

I'd have the right mind to deliver a knuckle sandwich to the lib that said this in order to both knock their circular John Lennon glasses off and knock some sense into them.

Really, I for one cannot stand to suffer these PC fools for much longer.

About thirty minutes.

Who wants to bet Monaghan and Smith both work in "the City of Evil?"

It is quite fitting that the idiots such as "John Q. Smith" should be quite at home in a place called "Town of Dix".

In fact, I think "Town of Dix" and "Town of Horseheads" should merge their communities and create one town/name. ;-)

There is a certain amount of "evil creep" out of Ithaca these days.

To make a long story short, like any other parastic organism the Ithacites, having begun draining the city dry with high property taxes, stunted non academic business growth and politically correct nonsense, are starting to move on to new host communities.

This is why it always annoys me when FREEPERS say "I like the idea of Ithaca. Keep 'em all in one place."

They don't stay. It's like they breed and send out spores... ;-)

Quite close !
I doubt there are many residents of this relatively conservative area who would object to the flags. It would, in fact,be an improvement on the present scene.

Montour Falls is a small village, whose most notable feature-other than commercial exploitation of the name "Catherine Montour"- is a waterfall at the end of the main street.

The folks who protest placement of flags are probably out-of-towners-(Yes,from Ithaca and Ithaca Heights )-who show up with their L.L. Bean "trendy" outfits, and try to re-make an area into their image of what the area should be.

Such people are often incredibly cheap, and have few compunctions about shoplifting from area merchants. They embrace all the "correct" causes, regard Black people as sacred ( unless they're planning to move into their upscale neighborhoods ), and generally act as if their sewage is a gift from the gods.

Catherine Montour-after whom this area was named- would have truly relished the thought of "caressing" these folks with slow fires, and all of the other hideous tortures her band of warriors enjoyed administering !

LOL. A classic description. They are actually afraid and do not know how to relate to minorities, are suffocating on thier own sense of guilt, and therefore isolate themselves but design all kinds of programs to 'mix it up' between ' the little people' to massage the guilt complex. Liberals.

No, I am sure they will get the right message, even if they don't want to hear it.

It seems to me that, if you go to the trouble of coming from another country to visit the United States you are not so anti American that seeing a few flags will cause you to have a breakdown.

The idiot is obviously projecting his own anti American feelings onto others.

Once you bring the flag into play, it becomes an emotional, almost religious issue . . . ."

Cognitive dissonance alert.

Yep. Like I said, this is just anothe socialist land grab.

The other thing I "love" about these trails is that they don't care one whit about the people who live along them who might not want, for example, hikers walking along their back yards.
