Recommendations wanted for domain name registrar and site hosting

Can I get away with asking the good folks on FR for recommendations? I'm going to be setting up a non-profit, education related, web site. So I'm looking for recommendations.

I need to register a domain name. What do I need to consider in choosing a domain name registrar? There are many out there. What are the differences? Are there any that you recommend?

And I will need to find an outfit to host e-mail and the web site. The web pages will be linked, by a program, to a database. A host running IIS would probably be the most convenient. Are there any that you have had good experience with?

We've used domaindirect.com and register.com

Couldn't see much differentce in the two. Maybe register is a little cheaper. Both these now offer all kinds of options for help setting up websites, etc.

I don't have any complaints about either company.

We did use a local internet company to host the website. By not using one of the larger companies we found that the service in dealing with technical issues was great.

I look at the prices they charge and how easy it is to use the service. I've got a few domains, and I've registered most of them through EasyDNS (easydns.com). They provide an easy to use web interface to manage my domains and their prices are reasonable in my opinion. It also helps a friend of mine runs it :)

I bought a DSL connection and am running my own servers, so I just pointed my DNS back to my place, and that is how I solved that.

If you need web/email hosting, those companies that provide that service usually will take care of registering the domain and maintaining it for you. The only cavet of that is to make sure YOUR name is listed as one of the domain contacts, otherwise you might end up with a company holding your domain hostage.

As for a recommendation for hosting, I don't know of any offhand. Sorry.

www.godaddy.com - domain registration 8.95/yr (1 yr), $6.95/yr (10 yr). I don't have my site up yet & I haven't figured out where I'm going to host it.

I use GKG.net for domain registration - 9.99 per year and

Webstrike or Seanic for hosting depending upon what the site needs.

Webstrike $30.00 setup and first year free.

Seanic $67.00 per year with no setup fees.

GoDaddy.Com as someone said ... I own several domain names ... 10-year registration for about $70 ... can't beat it ... try Icom.Com for hosting (name works but owned by another company) ... everything you need for less than $150 per year ... been using for nearly 5 years and my websites go to 155 countries ...

I'd reccomend Gandi-net (http://www.gandi.net) for registration--it's ICANN approved and doesn't resell your information. The price for 1 year is 12 Euros --about $11. Yes, it's a French based organization, but it works and is cheap.

For hosting try http://www.valuablehost.com they provide many extras and a basic package is only $14.25 for 3 months.

While you can use web design software like Front Page to develop your site, a knowlege of HTML sure helps. For a simple site you can also create your own code using Note Pad and free FTP software like Leech or Cute (http://www.download.com).

To teach yourself HTML get a copy of "The HTML Web Classroom" by Paul Meyer --available from the usual web sources or check your local college book store for used copies --it's a popular text for basic web design courses

I suppose I'm the webmaster. (Unless I have a volunteer?) I've worked some with an intranet and IIS. So, the part I know the least about is the name registration and hosting.

dreamhost.com. $25 setup fee if you don't pay for a whole year up front. $10 gets you 2GB of transfer, 100MB of storage, full CGI, shell access, IIRC 5 subdomains for free and free domain name registration. Plus they claim to host over 40,000 domains now so they're not a mom and pop shop.
