Dutch Sends 40 Refugee to Nigeria
The Netherlands Post ^ | June 12 2002 | The Associated Press

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — In a mass deportation, Dutch authorities sent 40 Nigerian asylum seekers back to their home country Wednesday, the 10th expulsion of illegal immigrants this year.

The Justice Ministry said the Nigerians were escorted on a special flight by Dutch soldiers. Some of the refugees had criminal records, it said.

Police are allowed to apprehend immigrants only if they are suspected of a crime, but that could change when the new government takes over next month.

Dutch newspapers reported Wednesday that the three coalition parties agreed any immigrant who cannot show valid residency papers should not be allowed to stay. The report said the parties also want to set up special police squads to detain and deport illegal immigrants.

Special police units would ensure that immigrants lacking a residence permit will no longer ``be wandering around in our country,'' Gerrit Zalm, leader of the Liberal Party, was quoted as saying by the Algemeen Dagblad newspaper.

In another effort to step up the fight against illegal immigration, the upcoming government also plans to tighten rules for marriage with someone from outside the Netherlands.

A permit for a partner will only be given to an applicant older than 21— rather than the current age of 18 — who earns at least $1,410 per month.

Immigration authorities began using special flights last year to speed up the expulsion of rejected asylum seekers.

``The alternative is transporting them one by one escorted by security officers on regular flights,'' said Martin Bruinsma, spokesman of the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

Hundreds of refugees have been sent to Congo, Cameroon, Romania, Suriname, Togo, Kosovo and Bulgaria since the beginning of this year.

I guess the changes are starting to show. This would have been unthinkable just 6 months ago.

Does the reference to the three coalition parties mean that a new right-wing government is now in power in Holland?

Not officialy. These new laws are the result of those three parties negociating about the new government. It could take a few weeks before the official government is presented (meaning the appointment of new ministers and a minister-president by the queen).

I hope the Dutch start showing the way in a first step to preserve what is left of judeo-Christian Western civilisation.

I fear however, that should our white house hear about this. Our "compassionate conservatism" administration may demand all the expulsees be sent to America in the vain hope they will register as republicans in time for the 2004 election.

Let's make a deal: all the US liberals to the Netherlands, and you take me in return.

"Special police units would ensure that immigrants lacking a residence permit will no longer ``be wandering around in our country.'' "

Isn't this what the INS is suppose to be doing in this country.

Interesting. My wife's cousin immigrated to the Netherlands from the Philippines just this past year, and she didn't make jack.

This law is new and has to be approved first. Denmark already did pass such a law, so there is chance it also will in the Netherlands.

They're not wasting any time, but it seems like the other political parties are just jumping on the bandwagon now that they see what a winner of a campaign issue it was.

What were they saying before LPF got the ball rolling?

Looks like the door slammed shut right after she made it through.

Yep. To be honest, though, foreign spouses are not the problem, its when the sheer number of immigrant families get to critical mass and illegal immegration is rampant, those are the problems.
