The Evening Capital, commonly known as "The Crab Wrapper" also had a laudatory editorial on this 6/12/02.
I guess we forget Harriet Tubman, Sojurner Truth, and even more recently Maryland's own Verda Welcome, who 1. were real people [imagine] and 2. did so much for black people. Instead we build monuments to characters that never existed, published by people who were publicly accused of plagiarism.
How far we have fallen.

How about Muhammad Ali's take on his "roots?" After his prize fight in Africa, a reporter asked him about his reaction to that continent, and he responded "Thank God they put my grandaddy on that boat and brought him over here." This is a pretty good attitude to take: slavery was terrible, but for those blacks living in America today, "Thank God" their ancestors were brought over.

The first part of the memorial- a commemorative bronze plaque and foundation for a subsequent sculpture- was build in 1997.
The second part, which was completed in 1999, consists of a sculpture of a seated Alex Haley reading a book to three children. The third part shows Alex Haley desperately copying Harold Courlander's work for his book Roots.
The fourth part shows Alex Haley settling out of court by paying Courlander $650,000 and admitting to stealing his work.
