Tyco fires general counsel amid probe [David Boies one of firm's new lawyers]

Tyco International Ltd. yesterday fired its general counsel, Mark Belnick, and replaced him with a former chief lawyer for the company, Irving Gutin.

The embattled Bermuda-based conglomerate - whose US headquarters is in Exeter, N.H. - said Belnick is one of several people under investigation at Tyco following last week's indictment of ousted chief executive Dennis Kozlowski on charges of evading sales taxes in New York. The company is investigating whether Kozlowski and other executives misused Tyco money to purchase millions of dollars worth of art and expensive real estate.
