Trotsky Lives! - Soviet Terrorism Unmasked
THE CARTER DOCTRINE
On 7th April 1981, Rep. Foglietta from Pennsylvania told the US House of Representatives: "The Carter Administration stated categorically that any direct Soviet military action in the Persian Gulf region would be met with he mobilization of American Forces and an immediate response to the endangerment of our increasingly vital energy sources; hence the creation of the Rapid Deployment Force."[1]
The crucial word in this summary of the "Carter doctrine" applicable to the defence of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf State was "direct." The Soviets tested the doctrine in 1990, when they sponsored the Iraqi regime's seizure of Kuwait, which was supervised by Soviet General Makashev, who arrived with a large number of additional Soviet advisers in Baghdad on 15th July 1990. When Moscow saw that the Carter doctrine remained in force, and was being implemented, they backed off; within three weeks, the Soviets had "adjusted" their stance and were straddling the middle ground, appearing to distance themselves from Iraq's annexation of Kuwait, and interacting intensively with the Bush Administration. The most prominent Soviet strategist involved in Middle Eastern affairs at that time was the Kremlin's leading Arabist, Yevgeniy Primakov, who speaks three languages apart from Russian - Turkish, Georgian (he is married to a Georgian) and Arabic.
One lesson the Soviets learned from their failure to procure Iraq's permanent annexation of Kuwait, and thus the seizure for the World Revolution of Kuwait's oil resources, was that the "first way"[2] or direct "attack on the Winter Palace approach to seizing the West's oil assets in order to choke the West to death, could not succeed - at least, not until the West had been fatally weakened. Therefore, Moscow at once set about elaborating and perfecting an "indirect" method of achieving its regional strategic objective. This dovetailed with the ongoing Soviet promotion of terrorism as an instrument of World Revolution through the proliferation of terror training camps, consequent upon the Politburo's decision in 1964 to increase spending on international terrorism by 1,000%.[3] The strategy has now matured; the vipers have hatched from these poisonous eggs - so that, several "generations" of terrorist organisations later, radicalised Muslim terror machines, imbued with the hatred for the United States taught at terror schools by the Soviets and their associates, are today being activated by the Leninist World Revolutionaries as deadly surrogate enemies of America. Unless the true instigators of this onslaught are identified, the West, flailing around in ignorance, will be plagued, weakened and perhaps ultimately defeated by this surrogate enemy.
LOST UNDERSTANDING
There was a time - before the false "Break with the Past" which fooled the West and gave the Leninist World Revolutionaries unprecedented new scope to prosecute the Revolution with Impunity, given the consequent blindness of their Western adversaries - when the United States understood that the Soviets were the chief sponsors and spawners of international terrorism. Although we have criticised him in the past for his rash activities in Georgia during the early 1990s, including his participation in one or more ventures with Georgian "authorities," George Schultz, the former US Secretary of State, can only be praised for what he said in a speech on 25th October 1984 in New York, long before he succumbed to the lie that Communism and the Soviet Union "collapsed:" "We should understand the Soviet role in international terrorism without exaggeration or distortion.... Today, there is no reason to think that Soviet support for terrorist groups around he world has diminished.... The Soviets condemn terrorism, but in practice they connive with terrorist groups... and their goal is always the same: to weaken liberal democracy and undermine world stability."[4]
Deceived by the false, Leninist "changes" implemented by the KGB and the GRU (Soviet Military Intelligence) in 1989-91, which some key former and contemporary policymakers appear to believe were precipitated in part by the Soviet "defeat" in Afghanistan in 1989, Western analysts and Governments convinced themselves that the "changes" were so impressive that they could not but be genuine. In so doing, they failed to understand that Bolsheviks who were capable of blowing up their own police stations in the 1920s in order to assist the provocation of Russian emigres to flock back to the Soviet Union (the "Trust" scam) during Lenin's false "New Economic Policy" (NEP) period, would be perfectly capable of mimicking Western capitalism for strategic deception and international public consumption purposes. All of a sudden, Western experts whose understand of overall Soviet revolutionary strategy had been all but impeccable in the mid-1980s, found themselves baffled by events, and eager to accept Soviet lies as genuine - because they apparently forgot Lenin's prescription elevating deception to a central role in revolutionary strategy: "A Communist must be prepared to make every sacrifice and, if necessary, even resort to all sorts of schemes and stratagems, employ illegitimate methods, conceal the truth, in order to conduct revolutionary work."[5]
THE ROOTS OF SOVIET TERROR
According to Professor Richard Pipes, former Director of the Russian Research Center at Harvard University, "the roots of Soviet terrorism, indeed of modern terrorism, date back to 1879,"[6] when a Congress of an organisation called Narodnaya Volya (The People's Will) met in the small Russian town of Lipetsk. On 1st March 1881, this group succeeded, after a succession of failures, in murdering Tzar Alexander II, even though he was known as the Tzar Liberator, because he had freed the Russian serfs in 1861. The philosophical underpinnings of the group, and of Soviet-spawned terrorism, may be found in the Catechism of the Revolutionary by Sergei Nechaiev (assisted by his mentor, the former artillery officer, Michael Bakunin). The son of a priest (Stalin studied to be a priest), and one of the most evil men who ever lived, Nechaiev "passionately embraced the cause of revolution. In 1869, he organised a society in Moscow for the purpose of preparing a mass insurrection. He shrank from nothing to attract followers, resorting to deceit, terrorism and murder."[7] By studying Nechaiev's hideous writings, today's student of the continuing World Revolution (and of its enhanced weapon, terrorism) can gain the necessary insight into the mentality we are confronted with. For in the Catechism, Nechaiev wrote:
"The Revolutionist is a doomed man [in other words, he knows he is going to hell; and he's right - Ed. (C.S.)]. He has no private interests, no affairs, sentiments, ties, property nor even a name of his own...heart and soul, not merely by word but by deed, he has severed every link with the social order and...the...civilised world. He is its merciless enemy and continues to inhabit it with only one purpose: to destroy it...Everything which promotes the success of the Revolution is moral; everything which hinders it is immoral. The nature of the true revolutionist excludes all romanticism, all tenderness, all ecstasy, all love."
This is a description of Osama Bin Laden and of the hundreds of thousands of modern Muslim and Marxist fanatics who have been trained in Soviet-sponsored and modelled terrorist training camps, beginning with the network of such camps set up in 1966 in the region around Havana, Cuba, under the supervision of the Soviet KGB Colonel Vadim Kotchergine.[8] The establishment of these terrorism training camps followed just ten months after the conclusion of the KGB-organised Tricontinental Conference, which opened in Havana in January 1966, attended by 513 delegates representing some 83 groups from the Third World. The announced purpose of this conference was to devise "a global revolutionary strategy to counter the global strategy of American imperialism."[9] But with effect from at least 1964, after the Politiburo had massively increased its global terrorism budget, "the secret services of all the Communist Bloc countries were involved in recruiting spies and infiltrating the world's nascent left-wing terrorist movements: special guerrilla training schools had been set up in Czechoslovikia, East Germany, and Cuba for 'selected terrorists from all over the world,' according to the late Czech defector General-Major Jan Sejna."[10]
About a century earlier, after falling out with Michael Bakunin and the breakup of his organisation by the Tzarist police, which led to the arrest of some 300 operatives, Nechaiev had fled to Switzerland. Bakunin left this description of his erstwhile terrorism comrade:
"Nechaiev...is as ruthless with himself as he is with others. He is a fanatic, but a very dangerous one, association with whom may be fatal to all concerned. His methods are abhorrent. He has come to the conclusion that to create a workable organisation one must use as a basis the philosophy of Machiavelli and adopt the motto of the Jesuits: 'Violence for the Body; lies for the Soul.' With the exception of ...the chosen leaders, all the members should serve as blind tools in the hands of those leaders...It is permissible to deceive these members, rob them, and even murder them if necessary. They are merely cannon fodder for conspiracies. For the good of the cause, he must be allowed to gain full mastery over your person, even against your will.'[11]
Professor Pipes explained why "The People's Will" is the model for the modern terrorist organisation, just as Nechaiev's Catechism of the Revolutionary established the mindset which infects the barbarous hoardes of Muslim and Marxist terrorists who have "graduated" from terrorism training camps modelled on those originally established under the supervision of KGB Colonel Kotchergine in 1966:
"The People's Will was the first to consider the enemy to be the whole system...capitalism, religion, law and everything else which kept the body politic intact."[12]
The successor, both in method and also partly in respect of ideology, to the Narodnaya Volya movement, was the party of the Social Revolutionaries (SRs), who launched attacks on the Russian Imperial Government in the early years of the 20th Century with the deliberate purpose of destroying the awe in which the Russian population held the regime. The campaign which has been waged in Britain over the past decade against the Monarchy has had the same objective, although the methods it has used have been less extreme (to date).
Professor Pipes observed: "They felt that as long as people feared the Government, and believed it to be omnipotent, there was no possibility of Revolution. So the murder of Government officials or supporters of the Government was an important step in causing the numinous glow surrounding the Government to evanesce. The ST campaign succeeded to a remarkable extent. Almost all contemporary observers note that after 1905, the traditional loyalty and belief of the Russian peasant in the Monarchy were broken. There was [by now] a great deal of contempt on the part of the peasant for the regime. This facilitated the events of 1917."
"THE DEFENCE OF TERRORISM" BY TROTSKY
It was of course Leon Trotsky (Braunstein) who followed in the footsteps of Nechaiev and Bakunin by adding to the literature of terrorism, with his tome entitled "The Defence of Terrorism," also called "Terrorism and Communism," which appeared in the English language in 1921.[13] On page 23 of this polemical work, Trotsky proclaimed that "the man who repudiates terrorism in principle - i.e., repudiates measures of suppression and intimidation towards determined armed counter-revolution, must reject all idea of the political supremacy of the working-class and its revolutionary dictatorship of the proletariat repudiates the Socialist Revolution, and digs the grave of socialism." This piece of subtle "backwards reasoning" was framed so as to imply that the Communists' "sacred cows" would be violated by anyone who denied the necessity of terrorism to enhance the prospects for the Revolution. In other words, those who did not support terrorism were not revolutionaries, and neither were they even socialists: they were scum, to be despised and destroyed.
Trotsky's lust for blood evidently knew no bounds, even though he was by far the most literate and profound of the founding revolutionaries: "That 'the proletariat will have to pay with blood, that, in the struggle for the conquest of power and for its consolidation, the proletariat will not only have to be killed, but [will also have to] kill - of this, no serious revolutionary can ever have any doubt...One cannot live by phrases about the great truth that under Socialism we shall need no Red Terror.'"
But Trotsky himself attributed the revolutionary doctrine that Communism cannot be "constructed" without terrorism, to Lenin. According to David Shub, an exiled Russian revolutionary, and author of a classic short life of Lenin,[14] "Lenin at every opportunity kept hammering into our heads that terror was unavoidable." In order to give physical expression to his demonic desire to embark upon state terror (a slightly different form than "state-sponsored terrorism," which in turn is superseded in our own time by "state-sponsored surrogate terrorism," a "third generation" of activism - terrorism deemed suited to contemporary "global" conditions at a time when everything is being done to downgrade the life expectancy of the nation state, which Leninism seeks to destroy),[15] Lenin identified and appointed the son of a rich Polish landowner called Felix Dzerzhinsky, from Poland's Vilno province. "He was fair, slightly round-shouldered, with a shot, pointed beard and transparent eyes with dilated pupils," wrote Shub. "There were moments when his friendly smile gave way to icy sternness. At such times, his eyes and ascetic bloodless lips revealed a demoniac fanaticism. Rigorous self-denial, incorrigible honesty, and a frigid indifference to the opinions of others, completed his makeup. His natural modesty, unassuming air, and quiet manners set him apart."
"On 20th December 1917, Lenin instructed Dzerzhinsky to organise an Extradordinary Commission for Combating Counter-revolution and Speculation. Under the name Check, the Soviet secret police soon became the symbol for a system of terror such as the world has never seen."[16] The Cheka initial headquarters was the Smolny Institute, a former girls' school in Leningrad - the self-same building in which Anatoliy Sobchak presided as Mayor of St Petersburg, and to which Vladimir Putin was mysteriously "posted" after his curious period of functioning as "assistant" to the "dean" of Leningrad University following his return to Russia from East Germany, and after he had successfully directed the instigation and supervision of the removal of East European regimes and their replacement by "second echelon," relabelled "non-"Communists in 1989-90.[17] As explained in Volume 27, Number 4 of this service, it is clear from Putin's "penetration" of and appointment to Sobchak's office at Smolny, that this building remains, to this day, a KGB facility of the utmost importance.
David Shub's narrative explaining the outbreak of state terrorism, from which its modern derivatives are descended, continued: "In later years its [the Cheka's] name was changed to OGPU, NKVD, MVD (and of course, subsequently to KGB and SVR - Ed.), but its purpose remained the same." This last statement has not in fact veen true since "the Organs" were instructed, in the late 1950s, under "the Shelepin plan" to inter-penetrate the Party and to develop the full potential of the revolution's assets - including the spreading, teaching and global application of terror as an instrument of strategy. "Dzerzhinsky became the first head of the Cheka."[18]
"There followed a series of uncovered plots, some true, others fantastic (i.e., they were Cheka provocations - Ed.), Dzerzhinsky was constantly sharpening the weapon of Soviet dictatorship. To Dzerzhinsky was brought the mass of undigested rumours from all parts of Petrograd. With the aid of picked squads of Chekists, Dzerzhinsky undertook to purge the city. Little time was wasted sifting evidence and classifying people rounded up in these night raids. Woe to him who did not disarm all suspicion at once. The prisoners were generally hustled to the old police station not far from the Winter Palace. Here, with or without perfunctory interrogation, they were stood up against the courtyard wall and shot. The staccato sounds of death were muffled by the roar of truck motors kept going for the purpose."
"Dzerzhinsky furnished the instrument for tearing a new society out of the womb of the old - th instrument of organised, systematic, mass terror. For Dzerzhinsky the class struggle meant exterminating 'the enemies of the working class.' The 'enemies of the working class' were all who opposed the Bolshevik dictatorship."
"At meetings of the Sovnarcom, Lenin often exchanged notes with his colleagues. On one occasion, he sent a note to Dzerzhinsky. 'How many vicious counter-revolutionaries are there in our prisons?' Dzerzhinsky's reply was: 'About fifteen hundred.' Lenin read it, snorted something to himself, made a cross beside the figure, and returned the note to Dzerzhinsky."
"Dzerzhinsky rose and left the room without a word. No-one paid any attention either to Lenin's note or to Dzerzhinsky's departure. The meeting continued. But the next day there was excited whispering. Dzerzhinsky had ordered the execution of all the fifteen hundred 'vicious counter-revolutionaries' the previous night. He had taken Lenin's cross as a collective death sentence."
"There would have been little comment had Lenin's gesture been meant as an order for wholesale liquidation. But, as Fotieva, Lenin's secretary, explained: 'There was a misunderstanding. Vladimir Ilyich never wanted the executions. Dzerzhinsky did not understand him. Vladimir Ilyich usually puts a cross on memoranda to indicate that he has read them and noted their contents.'"
"Early in 1918," added Shub,[19] "the Soviet leaders transferred the seat of government to Moscow. On his arrival in the ancient capital with his staff, Dzerzhinsky set out to find suitable quarters for his organisation. He chose the Rossiya Insurance Company building at 22 Lubianka Street. It was a comfortable structure with plenty of rooms, many side entrances, spacious cellars, and a broad courtyard. As the main office of the Cheka, 22 Lubianka Street was to become the most notorious address in Russia."
The cellars, of course, were ideal for adaptation as torture chambers and prisoners' cells. The courtyard was the perfect city-centre place for despatching recalcitrants with a bullet through the temples. Thus the Soviet regime, nurtured in the hellish tradition of Nechaiev's "People's Will" aberration, bathed itself in blood from the outset. Indeed, as Trotsky proclaimed, the Revolution makes no sense without terror, since its primary methods are those of Satan: pressure, coercion, intimidation and harassment. Since we are now truly living in the era of the World Revolution, terror has been exported by the Soviets globally. The only factor preventing the West from understanding and accepting this obvious truth is "the stumblingblock" - the determined, perverse, obtuse, reprobate, unreasoning, naive, misguided and frankly, stupid, belief, that the Leninist Soviet revolutionaries abandoned, all of a sudden, their global revolutionary intentions and ideology, and suddenly became "like us." This is manifest nonsense; and anyone who continues to maintain faith in such fairytales has taken leave of his capacity for logical reasoning and is living in a land of fantasy invented by the continuing Soviet diversion and disinformation apparatus. It out by now to be a matter of pride for professional analysts to reject these lies and fables - this being an absolute prerequisite for sound understanding of contemporary developments.
DEMYSTIFICATION AND OFFICIAL OVERREACTION
The indiscriminate use of terror adopted with relish (even though Lenin's secretary said that Dzerzhinsky's liquidation of 1,500 inmates in the early stages of the Red Terror was "a mistake") also had another, more subtle, effect, which should (but won't) serve as a warning to President Bush and Tony Blair in the present circumstances. As Pipes explained: "It should be noted that not only did the terror campaign demystify Russian rulers in the eyes of the people, but it also caused the Government to overreact. From 1879 onwards, the Imperial Government introduced a series of extremely harsh counter-measures meant to prevent terror, but which had the effect of alienating moderate groups in Russia. In the long run this made it impossible for the regime to ever secure the support of moderately conservative and liberal elements in Russian society; so it was left to fall, isolated and alone, in 1917."[20] In October 2001, as this issue was being prepared the British and American Governments were busily in the process of introducing extremely harsh counter-terrorism and anti-money-laundering measures in response to the atrocities of 11th September - having failed to grapple with terrorism adequately for the preceding three decades, and having allowed drug-derived funds to flood into and sustain the international financial system, so that it has become extensively dependent upon drug-trafficking proceeds. Indeed, as we have previously mentioned, a senior International Monetary Fund official told a reliable contact of ours recently that "we cannot fix the drug problem, because if the drug problem were to be fixed, the international financial system would collapse:" see box, below.
When Marx first heard about the exploits of "The People's Will" in Russian, he called these terrorists "splendid fellows."[21] Lenin, who was brought up in a "People's Will" environment, apparently believed in the Jacobin formula of applying terror only after power had been seized, as a means of breaking the will of the remaining opposition. Professor Pipes elaborated that "this experience left an indelible imprint on the minds of the Soviet leadership. This cannot be overemphasised. Nearly all elements of Soviet global strategy are essentially an adaptation to foreign policy of methods which had been learned by the Bolsheviks and their allies when they were in the underground fighting the Imperial regime."[22]
Professor Pipes' analysis for the Jonathan Institute in Jerusalem contained reasoning which pinpoints the central truth of the crisis the West faces today, as it confronts the terrorism onslaught unleashed, in particular, since the hideous events of 11th September 2001 - namely that while the Soviets use terror abroad, the seek to avoid being identified with terrorism. Does this insight not clearly illuminate your correspondent's contention - that the Bolsheviks are the ultimate instigators of the terrorism campaign unleashed against the West, as is evident even from press photographs of Taleban fighters equipped with Soviet-manufactured rocket launchers?[23] Pipes' analysis continued:
"I disagree with the contention that the West is vulnerable to terrorism, and the Soviet regime or totalitarian regimes are not. I think the contrary proposition is truer. In fact I think the Soviet regime is far more vulnerable to terror, internal terror, than are democratic societies, because their entire internal authority rests on the impression which they create of omniscience and omnipotence; if that image of omniscience and omnipotence is successfully challenged by terrorists, the Soviet regime will be threatened with exactly the same loss of internal support and respect which caused the downfall of the Imperial regime. Their tolerance of terror, therefore, is much lower than ours."[24]
While we do not entirely concur with this, Pipes' assertion that Soviet (Russian) tolerance of terror is lower than the West's rings true, since, as experts in the political use of terror, they know and fear the monster they have themselves incubated. But Pipes then adds:
"The Open encouragement of terror by the Soviet Government as a means of political action abroad could turn against that government, especially because it could be picked up as a weapon by the minority populations inhabiting the Soviet Union, who could launch a war of national revolution inside the Soviet empire using this instrument. For that very reason, the Soviet Union, while using terror abroad, nevertheless prefers not to identify itself with terror openly. Nonetheless, it also encourages and employs terrorism because terrorism is a handy and relatively cheap weapon in their arsenal to destroy western societies, both directly by supporting terrorist movements...and indirectly, by striking at what they perceive to be the West's power in the Third World."[25]
While this reasoning strikes us as being nothing like rigorous enough, it shows that leading brains in the West knew and understood, in the later 1970s, that the Bolsheviks were employing terrorism through proxies, as a weapon against the West. The question today is whether the false, Leninist discontinuity of 1980-91 has blinded the West to the reality that this weapon has been leveraged across several ensuing "generations" of "graduate" Muslim and Marxist Terrorists, without the underlying sponsor - the Leninist strategists directing the World Revolution - having changed.
Two developments which followed immediately after the outrages in New York and Washington point starkly to Soviet involvement: the first world leader to speak to President George W. Bush while he was still flying in Air Force One on 11th September, was President Putin. Why? Secondly, the Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage, described by The Washington Post as Secretary of State Colin L. Powell's "dearest friend," flew from Washington to Moscow on 3rd October, where he met his Russian counter, Vyacheslav Trubnikov, a senior Deputy Foreign Minister and previously Yevgeniy Primakov's successor as head of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service. These developments were starkly reminiscent of the Soviet response to President John Kennedy's assassination: Moscow at once sent the false "defector" Yuri Nosenko, who claimed to have handled Kennedy's alleged assassin, Oswald, to Washington, on a mission partly intended to impress upon the United States that the Soviets had not been involved in the assassination. An earlier parallel was the grotesque behaviour of Stalin in having himself photographed kissing the murdered Kirov as he lay in his casket. Was Putin "protesting too much?" One thing is certain: Moscow is engaged in a complex bold, Bolshevik operation to leverage the circumstances following the catastrophe of 11th September, to its own long-term advantage.
Having "looked into George W. Bush's eyes" during the US President's visit to Moscow a few months earlier, and seen that Bush was no "nuclear scientist," the Soviet strategists will certainly have concluded that the Americans remain so blind, that they will be unable to unravel what the Russians expect to gain from the aftermath of the September events, which they instigated - let alone what they are up to in the Middle East and along the shores of the Indian Ocean.
Addressing the same Jerusalem seminar, Ray S. Cline, a former Deputy Director for Intelligence at the CIA and Director of the Bureau of Intelligence and Research at the US State Department, noted that while the Soviet regime was in the habit of adopting a public position of propriety, "the circumstantial evidence that emerges shows the existence of a carefully developed terrorist infrastructure which serves Moscow's foreign policy objectives. The International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), the Soviet Seurity Police (KGB) and Soviet Military Intelligence (GRU) have played a major role in this effort."
"The International Department of the CPSU, headed by the (absolutely odious - Ed.) late Boris Ponomarev, has been the most important Soviet agency for the support of terrorism. It established, for example, the Lenin Institute in Moscow (also known as the Institute of Social Studies, Institute of Social Sciences, and International School of Marxism-Leninism),[26] responsible for supervision of the curriculum of revolutionary thought and practice as well as liaison with the Central Committee of the CPSU. Selected members of Western and Third World Communist Parties following the Soviet line have been training there in psychological warfare and propaganda, as well as in military techniques and guerrilla warfare."
"The CPSU has also built Moscow's Patrice Lumumba Friendship University to serve as a base of indoctrination and training of potential "freedom fighters" from teh Third World who are not Communist Party members. More specialised training in terrorism is provided at locations in Baku, Odessa, Simferopol, and Tashkent."[27]
ELEVATED TO GLOBAL SURROGATE WARFARE
Mr. Cline anticipated today's events when he told the Jerusalem seminar that "terrorism is escalating into the struggle for international power. It is becoming a form of surrogate warfare, whereby small groups with direct and indirect state support are conducting political warfare on a broad scale that can ultimately alter the balance of world power, without resort to the kind of organized warfare against which most of our military defense efforts are aimed. It could be the Achilles heel of open societies, unless we come to grapple with what it does to us strategically as well as psychologically."[28]
Such prescience over two decades ago! Where has such expert understanding gone? Has it totally succumbed to the indirect mind-control offensive built on the inverted pyramid of Leninist lies about the "collapse of Communism" and the "disintegration of the Soviet Union?" If so, the West is bound by a glaring non-sequitur - that the "collapse of the Soviet Union" automatically "means" that sponsorship of terrorism by the USSR's "successors" was abruptly abandoned when the USSR "collapsed," despite the lack of evidence for any such rash conclusion. That such an unwarranted leap of fantasy could have been entertained by Western intelligence communities, which include some of the sharpest brains in the world, needs some explaining.
But not only was the no discontinuity of the terrorism dimension: it is also Soviet Analyst's conclusion that in essential strategic respects, the framework of the Soviet Union remains in existence - served, in particular, by Soviet Military Intelligence (GRU), which continues to use the form "Leningrad" for St. Petersburg, and "Soviet Union" for Russia and "former USSR." What is the Western official response to such basic, ground-floor evidence that the Soviet Union remains in existence as that publicised in recent issues of Soviet Analyst - the "Sovetskaya Rossiya" newspaper, "Sovetskiy Sport," and the Hotel Sovetskaya, for instance?"[29]
EAST EUROPEAN-SOVIET LINKS STILL INTACT
It is also clear that, as Anatoliy Golitsyn warned in his classic work "The Perestroika Deception,"[30] the essential security structures which linked the USSR to its satellites in Central and Eastern Europe remain intact. The West is sitting on its collective brains! Who was participating in the huge military and airborne exercise in the course of which a Ukrainian missile shot down a Russian airliner packed with Russian Israelis, in early October? Answer: "Other former [Soviet] Central Asian and East European nations," and "Russia's own Air Force Commander was in attendance"[31] [32] - that is to say, was in command of the land, sea and air maneuvers, billed as the largest in Ukraine's history. Separately, President Putin told the visiting (covert Communist) Polish President Alexander Krasniewski on 15th October in Moscow that "the ties between our countries have been preserved and are expanding." This is in precise conformity with Golitsyn's prediction - that the disintegration of the Eastern Bloc was fundamentally cosmetic and that essential security links have been retained and were to be enlarged; although note that Putin did not qualify the word "ties," implying that all ties "have been preserved and are expanding." The West is blind to all this.
Ray Cline also told the Jerusalem seminar back in 1979 that "both the KGB and GRU have attempted to construct, or at least to influence, various terrorist movement. V.N. Sakharov, a defecting KGB officer, has revealed that the KGB sought to form terrorist cells in Saudi Arabia and the smaller Arab states in the Persian Gulf and in Turkey. Similarly, clandestine Soviet efforts have been made to penetrate and control the Palestinian movement since at least the late 1960s. Also, KGB members have established links with the IRA through the British and Irish Communist parties and the Marxist wing of the Official IRA. In fact, through Libya, arms have reached all sides in the Irish terror and counter-terror warfare except the UK forces of law and order. Moreover, since the KGB virtually controls the Cuban Intelligence Service (Direccion General de Inteligencia, or DGI), it is ultimately able to influence the activities of...Latin American and African vaguely Castroite groups and the dominant revolutionary parties in Angola and Ethiopia."[33]
SEVERAL "GENERATIONS" OF TERRORISTS LATER...
Dated and incomplete though these assessments now are, they were perhaps insufficiently rigorous when they were published over two decades ago. We have now reached a situation several "generations later" in which terrorist graduates from terror-training schools in the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, Cuba, Chechnya, Afghanistan and the Middle East have produced literally hundreds of thousands of Muslim and Marxist fanatics, all of whom have been meticulously taught to hate America and the West (but especially "the main enemy," the United States). A Sunday Times (London) report noted recently that "Jalalabad, with its suburban training camps, is a terrorist town."[34] This description echoes Claire Sterling's statement in her classic and disgracefully overlooked book, "The Terror Network" (1981) that "all the world's emerging terrorist bands in the 1970s were indebted to the Cubans and their Russian patrons for that honeycomb of camps around Havana"[35] established under the sharp supervision of KGB colonel Kotchergine ten months after the conclusion of the KGB-sponsored Tricontinental Conference, held in the Cuban capitol in January 1966. Self-evidently the "honeycomb of camps around Havana" was the model for "Jalalabad...a terrorist town, with its suburban training camps."

"Second Way" (rarely mentioned): the open flaunting of Communist-Leninist labels and the establishment and maintenance of overt Communist regimes. As was revealed in the course of the Editor's interview with Dr. James Garrison, head of the State of the World Forum and the Gorbachev Foundation/USA, published in Soviet Analyst, Volume 26, Number 7 (September 2000), the Gorbachev Foundation/USA, previously the Tamalpais Institute, has "nothing to do with" the Gorbachev Foundation/Moscow. A US Airforce Brigadier General who entertained a senior Russian Admiral several years ago for a weekend, under a "welcome" scheme for Russian officials, was told by the Admiral that the Gorbachev Foundation/Moscow was engaged in the construction of a new facility outside Moscow measuring "one kilo-metre square." It has not so far been possible to verify this claim; but if true, the facility would represent the new "engine-room" of Lenin's continuing World Revolution.
