URBANA, Ill. - Using a little logic and a lot of elbow grease, eight students at the University of Illinois believe they are closing in on a mystery that has stumped historians and pundits for three decades: the identity of "Deep Throat," a mysterious key player in the Watergate scandal that cost Richard Nixon his presidency.
Professor William Gaines and his students say they have narrowed the list of potential suspects to seven, with an inner core of four or five best bets.

Sometimes, as in January 3, 5 and 7 1973, he had a large black valise with him.
Jack Anderson said that John visited the defendants on those days - Anderson had his agent inside a closet in the apartment on the 7th floor of the Madison Building where they met with Dean to divy up "payoffs" to keep their mouths shut.
Other times H. R. Haldemann came with him. Many's the time I've walked by his junk car, him at the wheel, on my way to work.
There is no mystery about why John Dean attempts to predict who "Deep Throat" might be - it's to throw everybody off his trail.
As someone said about The Final Days, "Please tell me how you get three independent sources for what Henry Kissinger was thinking when he stepped out of the elevator."
If you really look at Watergate, you will find that there are virtually no "facts" at all. No secrets to be revealed. Nothing but a third-rate burglary--which was an attempt to ferret out and counteract some Democrat dirty tricks--and an enormous witch-hunt by the liberal media and the Democrats, right at the height of the new-left fervor that bubbled up during the Countercultural Revolution.
What, Nixon considered using one FBI file, but decided not too. How horrible. He used bad language when he talked to staffers? How awful.
Clinton stole 900 FBI files, and as far as we know he still has them. And Lyndon Johnson was capable of almost any kind of corruption to get what he wanted.
If this is what is being "taught" to journalism students today, can you imagine what level of "reporting" we will have 20 years hence? First, let's make Woodward and Bernstein icons, who's every word you take at face value, then we shall set off to solve the "great mystery" of the century. You have to laugh at the leftists and their self-importance, it's breathtaking!
From the enormous range of material provided, it is extremely probable that Deep Throat is actually more than one person, because no single person, no matter how highly placed, would have known all those details about far-flung offices. A serious question is: What was Deep Throat's payoff?? My guess is the Deep Throat (whether it was one or a bunch) wanted anonymity or at least a very low profile in the newspaper coverage; wanted his own name left out of the scandals. If that is correct, it may help to compare who was left out of Washington Post coverage but mentioned in other papers (prime candidate: John Dean's assistant, Fred Fielding, who hardly rated a mention in the Washington Post but got lots of attention in the London Times book on the scandals). I think probably two or more people played Deep Throat, and very probably didn't know about each other.
Liddy lashed out at Nixon executive, calls Dean a "serial perjurer":
BALTIMORE (AP) Watergate burglar G. Gordon Liddy sharply criticized former White House counsel John Dean on Tuesday, accusing him of lying repeatedly about his role as the mastermind of the botched break-in that led to President Nixon's resignation.
During his second day of testimony at his defamation trial, Liddy was asked whether he considered assassinating Dean. He said Dean wasn't ''worth the 25 cents it would cost to shoot him.''
Liddy also repeated his theory that Dean organized the 1972 burglary to retrieve photos of his future wife, Maureen, from a package of call-girl photos used to set up liaisons in nearby apartments for visitors to the Democratic National Committee.

G. Gordon Liddy Loses Case On Appeal, Mar. 1, 2002... biased and misleading title, it isn't over...but the left has a lot invested in their 'story'.
In short, I was a witness for a different aspect of the story, and I do not recall G. Gordon Liddy being around Arlington Towers at all.
On the other hand, I danced with Dean's "to be" wife at a party thrown by some Secret Service guys and she wanted me to go into the bathroom with her for some reason - I did not go!
Other than having been sworn into federal service by Liddy, he and I haven't really been close over the years - still, we do cross paths from time to time. Would you believe I remember when he had hair!!!
A question I would like answered and most likely John Dean could answer it, is , why bother taping the lock to keep the door open? After all the so called burglers were already IN the building.
I've always believed G. Gordon's account. I think the whole thing was an operation created by Dean, ordered by Dean and whether he meant to do it or not, he brought down Nixon. No wonder the media still loves this digusting person.
I agree with this, isn't this the third time or so he's supposedly revealed who Deep Throat was/is?
You've got that right. However, did W & B really miss it or did they just not want to make the DNC look bad?
John Dean is a piece of garbage, whose immorality is only exceeded by his whore of a wife.
Lol! Good decision. (^: Thanks for sharing your first-hand account. Two generations have grown up believing that Watergate was accurately depicted in "All the President's Men." When a few undeciphered seconds of Nixon tapes are released, the press salivates. I hope that you and others will document your experiences and leave them with honorable people for the sake of future generations. Somehow, I think they might get lost in the National Archives.
The story of the DNC call-girl ring, and Dean's fiance's pic being included with the call-girl photos in the DNC secretary's desk, didn't originate with G Gordon. He found out after reading someone else's well-researched and sourced book.
Chuck Colson, hearing about the same call-girl theory said that it made sense to him. He claimed that Nixon was a "square" and that if Nixon knew about Dean's "swinging" lifestyle, he'd be fired.
The story will come out some day. I do my teensy part. (^:
A conspiracy....definitely. VAST left-wing conspiracy....and Hillary was there.(^:
