...TORNADO WARNING NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE KANSAS CITY/PLEASANT HILL MO 701 PM CDT WED MAY 8 2002

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN PLEASANT HILL HAS ISSUED A

* TORNADO WARNING FOR... SOUTHERN CLINTON COUNTY IN NORTHWEST MISSOURI NORTHERN CLAY COUNTY IN WEST CENTRAL MISSOURI

* UNTIL 745 PM CDT

* AT 659 PM CDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM CAPABLE OF PRODUCING A TORNADO. THIS DANGEROUS STORM WAS LOCATED NEAR SMITHVILLE...MOVING NORTHEAST AT 55 MPH. THIS STORM DID PRODUCE A TORNADO IN LEAVENWORTH COUNTY WITH RECENT FUNNEL CLOUD SIGHTINGS IN PLATTE COUNTY. LARGE HAIL AND DESTRUCTIVE THUNDERSTORM WINDS ARE ALSO LIKELY WITH THIS STORM.

* THIS TORNADIC STORM IS EXPECTED TO BE NEAR... KEARNEY BY 710 PM CDT. HOLT...PLATTSBURG BY 715 PM CDT. LATHROP BY 720 PM CDT.

WHEN A TORNADO WARNING IS ISSUED BASED ON DOPPLER RADAR...IT MEANS THAT STRONG ROTATION HAS BEEN DETECTED IN THE STORM. A TORNADO MAY ALREADY BE ON THE GROUND...OR IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP SHORTLY. IF YOU ARE IN THE PATH OF THIS DANGEROUS STORM...MOVE INDOORS AND TO THE LOWEST LEVEL OF THE BUILDING. STAY AWAY FROM WINDOWS. IF DRIVING...DO NOT SEEK SHELTER UNDER A HIGHWAY OVERPASS.

Pratt, KS has a big tornado yesterday.

Crowley County (Arkansas City) near Wichita, KS has a tornado warning now.

Tornado touched down in Leavenworth/Lansing area. Local TV reporting roof off the KMart. My wife wondering if they'll have a sale.

And this is news? When I lived in south central Nebraska, we got tornadoes once a week or something. You get hundreds of the things out in those parts. Most don't do much damage, and you usually have a fair bit of warning if you keep half an eye out during severe weather. Its funny how you get used to hazards when you have to live with them day after day.
