April 30, 2002; Faced with constantly escalating violence in the Malukus, the government is planning to impose martial law and send more troops.
April 28, 2002; In the Malukus, armed Moslems raided two Christian villages and killed 13 civilians. Some of the attackers were wearing army uniforms. The Maluku Christians have long claimed that Moslem soldiers have joined with Moslem radicals to attacks Christians. Because of this, a movement to establish an independent Christian nation in part of the Malukus has become more popular among Maluku Christians.
April 26, 2002; Several hundred additional police were sent to the Malukus to deal with the increased violence between Christians and Moslems. Police have arrested 27 local Christians for raising RMS flags. Moslem mobs marched on Christian areas, burning a Christian church. At least six bombs went off in the provincial capital, Ambon.
April 25, 2002; Today is the 52nd anniversary of the founding of the RMS (South Maluku Republic) organization, a long banned movement to establish a Christian state here. As a result, Christian separatists are holding more demonstrations in the Maluku islands. The Christians feel that the government cannot, or will not, protect them from Moslem militants.
