Iraq expects US strike 'at any time'

BAGHDAD: Iraq expects a US strike "at any moment", Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan said in an interview broadcast on Saturday.

"Psychologically, we are expecting a US attack to happen at any time. We don't want this but that's the reality," Ramadan told the Saudi-owned Middle East Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).

"The US administration will not hesitate to hit Iraq if it has the chance," he said. "Hostile intentions from the United States are not a secret, as shown in calls to overthrow the regime, not only of Iraq, but other countries as well," Ramadan said, referring to Venezuela, whose President Hugo Chavez recently survived a two-day coup d'etat that Baghdad has accused Washington of orchestrating.

The US administration had "neither values nor manners nor respect for UN Security Council conventions and resolutions." Iraq will resume talks with the United Nations next week under the threat of US military action if arms inspectors are not allowed back into the country to verify Baghdad's claims to have no weapons of mass destruction.

However, Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan leader who was briefly overthrown before being reinistated, has ruled out the possibility of direct U.S. involvement in the coup d'etat.
