rightly considered a crime by society You have nailed down the interesting part of the Pope's message. If he thinks it's a crime (which it is...he's right), then does this mean he FAVORS all records on these things being turned over to civil authorities.

Too late. Why do you think they all scrambled over to the Vatican? And what did they bring with them? Anything that would be self incriminating to the individuals within hierarchy is out of reach now, I would assume. This is why some were concerned of an implied upward domino effect.
