Ahmedabad, April 21

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In a sharp spurt in violence in Gujarat, at least 12 people, including a woman and a policeman, were on Sunday killed and 96 injured with Ahmedabad bearing the brunt even as Defence Minister George Fernandes claimed improvement in the situation in the riot-torn state. Nine of the 12 perished in police firing in labour-dominated Gomtipur, Bapunagar and Rakkhiyal localities of Ahmedabad and Mehmdabad and Kapadwanj towns of Kheda district, police sources here said.

Police sources here said 10 people, including a constable and a woman, were killed, in Gomtipur and adjoining Bapunagar and Rakhiyal localities, with seven of them in police firing on mobs indulging in arson as army was called out and curfew imposed in all the three localities.

One person was stabbed to death, another died in petrol bomb attack and yet another succumbed to injuries by sharp-edged weapons in the localities.

At least 66 people were injured in group clashes, arson and police firing in the violence-torn areas of Ahmedabad today.

Police opened fire on mobs indulging in arson killing two persons in Kheda district's Kapadwanj and Mehmedabad talukas overnight prompting imposition of curfew in both the areas, police sources said.

Police also fired on mobs which set on fire 30 shops and houses in Kadi town in Mehsana district this afternoon leaving 11 injured. Curfew was clamped in the town where clashes between two groups and rioting had broken out last night.

Some houses were set ablaze in Nagpurvora chawl in Gomtipur where ten people, including three women, were injured in clashes and two in police firing.

Police resorted to firing and bursting of teargas shells to scare away the rioters.

Arson spread to Bapunagar, also a labour-dominated locality, and Rakhial areas adjoining Gomtipur.

Thirty-six persons were injured, including 13 in police firing, following arson and stone pelting and throwing of petrol bombs in Gomtipur and Kadi where BSF jawans were deployed, the sources said. BSF=BorderSecurityForce

CURFEW IN MAHEMDABAD, GOMTIPUR TOWNS LIVE FROM AHMEDABAD / LEENA MISRA

TIMES NEWS NETWORK [ SUNDAY, APRIL 21, 2002 8:27:18 PM ]

AHMEDABAD: Communal fire engulfed Gujarat once again and the fresh spate of violence, that began on Saturday night and continued through Sunday, left as many as 10 dead even as Union Defence Minister George Fernandes was on a ‘healing mission’ to the state.

Sunday, that marked Ram Navami, saw the death of nine persons, including a policeman, as violence spread in the sensitive areas of Ahmedabad and in Kheda and Mehsana districts. One person had died in police firing on Saturday night in Kapadvanj area of Kheda district. Curfew had to be clamped on three police station areas in Ahmedabad and three towns in the state.

In Gomtipur area of Ahmedabad, a police constable died of sword injuries and a person was killed in a bomb explosion on Sunday afternoon. Seven others fell to police bullets, including a woman, as tension refused to subside in the city.

Rumours about students being kidnapped by certain people to prevent them from appearing in the board examinations are said to have ignited violence. The escalation of violence puts in doubt the peaceful conduct of the rest of the examinations from Monday.

On Sunday morning, one person died in the Mahemdabad area of Kheda district as police fired 33 rounds to disperse a mob. The rioting mobs also set on fire an SRP point at Hardasnagar in the Bapunagar area. Violence spread to Mehsana district too with curfew being imposed on Kadi town after mobs clashed on Sunday afternoon. Police sources said that a Ram dhun programme was disrupted by a group of people who allegedly pelted stones at devotees, which provoked the reaction. Police fired at least 60 rounds in which seven people were injured. The BSF and the RAF had been called in this town to maintain law and order.

Indefinite curfew was imposed in Gomtipur, Bapunagar and Rakhial areas on Sunday afternoon as mobs refused to disperse following bouts of stone-throwing, arson and crude explosions on Sunday. Reviving the chilling memories of February 28, rioting mobs set on fire the Nagpur Vohra ni chaali and then stopped the fire fighters from reaching the place on Saturday night.

Police opened fire on the mob, many among whom were injured after petrol bombs were hurled at them. Arson and violence continued to spread to other adjoining areas as the Army was called in to take control of the situation on Sunday. A constable, Amar Suresh Rao Patil, who was on law and order duty in the area, died after injuries from a sharp weapon. Joint commissioner of police (sector II) MK Tandon told TNN that the accused in this case had been arrested from the spot. Violence continued to spread in the Sakra Ghanchi ni chaali, Usha Talkies road and Gomtipur gam.

The Nagpur Vohra chawl* near the famous Shaking minarets of Gomtipur continued to burn till Sunday evening with firemen claiming that this was a call they could not attend. Tension spread to the areas of Bapunagar and Rakhial where it was first ignited after the Godhra carnage. Arson and violence continued unabated in these areas through the afternoon.

Widespread arson was reported from the mixed localities of Mahemdabad and Kapadvanj in Kheda district over Saturday night. At least 15 shops were set on fire in Kapadvanj and some 35 huts torched in Mahemdabad. Superintendent of police of the district Manoj Agrawal told TNN that 60 persons had been arrested in connection with the riots.

Sources said that at Kapadvanj the violence started when people from one community blocked a particular road connecting other localities by building a wall.

But still not clearly identifying an aggressor or a cause.

My guess is that India is being cautious about naming names because of fear of reprisal.

I don't think Hindu's have global domination as part of their belief system.

Muslims, OTH, desire the planet by whatever means, no matter how long it takes.

Reminds me of the tactics of Satan.

Just like the communal riot is virtually a set piece there, excising religion identity during this time probably helps in dampening things down.
