Now that the federal government is involved in airport security, they could issue a Request for Proposal for an alarm device that goes off whenever a screening machine is unplugged. I'll bet one of the military contractors could produce such an item in large quantities, for about ten grand apiece. Or, if the government agrees, I could run down to Radio Shack and make such an alarm for about a buck each.

The solution is to remove the plug altogether. These machines should be "hardwired" into their power source. In the meantime, there should be surveillance cameras directed at where the machine is plugged into the wall and anyone caught tampering should immediately be charged as a terrorist and prosecuted.

Why should this be a problem? Jane Garvey's been unplugged for five years.

That's actually a great idea. Every electronics company in the world is trying to save a few pennies on each part to try to bring a competetive product to market. The government, which is trying to prevent its citizens from being murdered, can't seem to accomplish the simplest, most obvious tasks for any amount of money.

Thinking about this and perhaps a different spin is in order.
Mistakes are made and it is only human to try to hide your errors. Almost every day now, we hear of a metal detector being unplugged. Now, I agree that hard wiring it is the answer, but kudos should go to the screener that has the b***s to say "I made a mistake, let's re-screen the entire airport".
What makes it even more laudable is if they are part of the federalized force. Covering up is the way of life in the federal work force.
Just food for thought.

How can the security people not know if the x-ray machine is plugged in? For crying out loud is this a reflection of the education system in the USA or just the people the airlines hire? Perhaps both? God help us.

Agreed. Dust the plug for prints, and then fire the fool. This kind of idiocy happens too routinely during these extraordinary times; makes me wonder how pathetically they performed pre-September 11th.

I just got through security at Midway with a nail file in my carry-on. It was such a bold thing to do!
