Man kills teen stepdaughter, himself

Police still searching for motive in Garland murder-suicide

GARLAND - Investigators were searching late Friday for a reason why a Garland man shot and killed his 16-year-old stepdaughter and then fatally shot himself.

Andrea Anguiano, a sophomore at Lakeview Centennial High School, was shot in the head and taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where she died about 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Jose Gonzales, 31, died Friday morning of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.

Police said the murder-suicide took place about 6:30 a.m. Friday at a home in the 1300 block of Curtis Drive in east Garland.

Neither Mr. Gonzales nor Andrea lived at the home, but the teen had stayed overnight with her aunt, who called 911 Friday morning after hearing shots inside a locked room, police said.

"I think my brother-in-law just killed my niece," the woman told an emergency dispatcher, according to a 911 tape released by Garland officials Friday. "... They were in the other room, and I heard shots. Oh my God, nobody's talking now!"

Later, the dispatcher asked the woman whether Mr. Gonzales was arguing with his stepdaughter.

"No, they were just talking," the woman replied. "I don't know what my sister's going to do."

Residents at the home declined to comment Friday.

Investigators were trying to interview relatives but had not determined a motive by late Friday, said Officer Stephanie Funk, a Garland police spokeswoman.

"The girl's mother is very traumatized, and the detective has not had a chance to interview her," Officer Funk said. "Until we can talk to her, we don't have any real family history to know what might have gone on."

The girl's mother could not be reached for comment.

Police said they had not previously responded to any emergency calls at the address on Curtis Drive and did not have Mr. Gonzales' or Andrea's name in their records.

Investigators said the shooting was domestic in nature, but they were unsure Friday why Mr. Gonzales was at the home.

News of Andrea's death came late Friday afternoon, and school officials said most of the students had already gone home for the weekend.

"There will be some students who come back after the weekend and still haven't heard about it," said Steve Knagg, spokesman for the Garland Independent School District. "We will have counselors ready to go on Monday to help the students because it affects the whole school."

On the surface, I think he was about to be found out about abuse. The step-daughter was going to tell Mom. It's the only thing that makes sense.

Nah. Not nuts. Maybe she was pregnant and refused to get an abortion. Of course the media will conceal it if this turns out to be the case.

Yeah. She died within 6 hours of this incident. It didn't come out until about the time the school kids were gettin' out of school Friday. There will be counseling for them on Monday when they return to hear this news. Most don't know about it as yet...........
Bad world we live in, huh?

The stepfather is only 15 years older than the girl ---I wonder how old the mother is and if the stepfather might have been more involved with the daughter than the mother.
