The two were arrested after James Edward Bassham, 21, 3625 Village Trail, was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with multiple gunshot wounds to his head and face. Bassham will face similar charges, police said, when he is released from the hospital. Police said Bassham is suspected of entering the Discount Tobacco Outlet at 3006 Dickerson Pike about 8:30 p.m. with a gun drawn and a bandana over his face. As the robber was ordering a customer to lie on the floor, clerk Rodney Busby, 41, got a .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol and opened fire, police said.Give the criminal perp a medal before you bundle him off to the pokey.
He may be about the first man in history to survive a hail of .40 caliber shots to the head... and lived!!

Multiple gunshot wounds to his head and face, and he still gets away? Lucky guy. Kudos to the clerk, but I bet he wishes the dude doesn't make it out of the hospital.

Well, no Darwinism involved, but a "good shooting!" nonetheless to the store clerk - at least he got hits.

A little better wording... if he "survived" the shots, that would seem to imply that he "lived"...
heh, heh, don't mind my redundancy... ;-)

Sounds like an unreliable round to me. (That, or a damn tough thug...)
My guess is that a .45 would have been a taxpayer's money saver here.

Ever notice how, when the intended victim is armed, the headline always seems to read,
"Attempted hold-up averted..."?
Wonder why we rarely hear of a successful crime under those circumstances...hmmm???

Police said the shooting ought to remind suspects that robbery can be a dangerous business.''In this day and age, robbery suspects never know which intended victim might be armed,'' Metro police spokesman Don Aaron said.
(Sputter sputter !!!!)
Excuse me while I go looking for my jaw!

Anybody not understand this?
Congratulations, Mr. Don Aaron. May I introduce you to Mrs. Brady?

It was just a flesh wound.Plural "flesh wounds", at the very least.
James Edward Bassham, 21, 3625 Village Trail, was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with multiple gunshot wounds to his head and face
Scumbag must've soaked a *lot* of kinetic energy, any way you figger it.... Wonder if he still attempted to bite off the shooter's kneecaps?

Re: Surviving multiple 40 calibre hits to the head:
I remember calling "Missed Me! Missed Me!" when we were playing Cowboys and Indians as a kid. I had no idea it works in real life!
I have a hard time thinking that this is being reported correctly.
