Jan 22, 2002 -- (BBC Monitoring) Text of report by Spanish national radio on 22 January.

[Presenter] Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov has said his country's wish is to cooperate and join forces with the European Union in the measures adopted in the fight against terrorism. The Russian minister is on an official visit to our country and will today hold a meeting with his counterpart, Josep Pique; he will also meet Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar and be received in an audience with King Juan Carlos. Hector Arenas reports:

[Reporter] At Barajas airport [Madrid] he said: We are happy with relations with Spain, adding: We shall take the opportunity of the Spanish EU presidency to discuss rapprochement between Russia and the European Union. In answer to a question, the Russian minister and former ambassador to Madrid condemned the treatment of the Taleban prisoners from the terrorist organization Al-Qa'idah at the U.S. base of Guantanamo:

[Ivanov, in Spanish] We cannot fight terrorism by violating the law, so we hope that on this matter, too, we can continue cooperation within the international coalition, but - I repeat - while basing all our steps and actions on international law.

So much for our good buddies the Russians. Seems like we might be heading for a parting of ways since our mutual understanding of 9/11.

Anyone care to speculate on what conditions for Chechen prisioners are like?

Well, they must not be as tightly-wrapped as our Al-Quaeda guys or there wouldn't be so much blood left on the walls of the torture cells.

Don't you think we sorta teed the ball for Russians in this instance?

Was it really necessary to imprison thus a number of men we're going to return before the freakin' "War on Terrorism" is even over?

Was it Amnesty International that held our feet to the fire and made us line up the prisoners for a photo shoot behind some protective yet oh-so-revealing hurricane fencing?

I mean ... nothing here makes a hell of a lot of sense. From our end, anyway.

My guess is we've gone a little topsy-turvy in this "War on Terrorism". The only question for me is whether or not it was our idea to do so.

What's the term "skewered with your own something or other"?

When things get too tough, the Russians usually bury them out back behind the base.

Actually the Al-Qaida are treated much better than Russians treat Chechens, and also better than conditions in any US major city county jail or state prison except for protective custody.

However it doesn't look good and people are focusing on what the cameras say instead of what's happening at places where there are no cameras.
