This would be adequately explained if the invaders killed the men and ravished the women...

NO it wouldn't. For the Y chromosome to have survived, it's the MEN of the Celts that had to keep breeding. You couldn't take their wives without your invading Y chromosome showing up. Perhaps as the Anglo-Saxons invaded they had their wives impregnated by the Celtic men before they cut their heads off? (sarcasm /off)

If you go into a town and kill all the men, then you have to do all the work to keep the town going, and frankly, that's the very thing you got in your boat to avoid doing in the first place.

You don't even need to kill all or even most of the men.

Just kill the resistors and holdouts, and the rest will learn to say "Yes Sir" in the new language real fast.

Contrary to popular opinion the Vikings actually settled in places they invaded. They conquered large portions of central europe and russia. They had a society that was interested in wealth and staying where they invaded, ensured prolonged wealth. I believe the fairness of the English and some of Russia is attributed to their genes. I don't believe they were any more barbaric than any other population at the time.

An interesting follow-up study would be to look at the mitochondrial DNA of these same families. This DNA is passed exclusively from mother to child.

That's my impression to. All this means is most of the Brits had offspring from their neighbors... not uncommon given the numbers that cross the borders these day.

Give me a trace of their family names on the father's side, if they're all Bakers and Winstons, this will only tell me that they got married to the Celts.

.
No, because the celtic Y chromosome could not come from their women!
