Honor Roll for today: FreeTheHostages, BufordP, Taxman, Jimmy Valentine's brother, tgslTakoma and kristinn.
The knoll overlooking the side of the Pentagon damaged in the September 11 terrorist attacks was swept clean of memorials yesterday by the Department of Defense to preserve them for posterity.
Among the items presumably taken was the D.C. Chapter's tribute to fallen FReepers BKO and BCM, both of whom died in the attacks.
The six of us gathered on the knoll today to pay our respects to all who were murdered in the September 11 terrorist attacks; to show support for our troops involved in Operation Enduring Freedom; and to re-create the tribute to BKO and BCM.
tgslTakoma designed two simple floral arrangement of red, white and (kinda) blue and adorned them with photo cards of Barbara Olson and John Moran, both b/w the "Paybax" movie poster featuring President Bush, Vice President Cheney, Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld and National Security Advisor Condi Rice.
The arrangement was placed under a sapling near the top of the knoll. tgslTakoma also placed a few miniature versions of Infinite FReep demonstration signs used by the D.C. Chapter.
Jimmy Valentine's brother donated an American flag which he and Taxman secured behind the arrangement.
We topped the tribute off with a placard we hung from the sapling. One side featured the D.C. Chapter logo with a message from the chapter, while the other side had the Free Republic logo and a message of support to our troops.
Even though it was a beautiful day--partly sunny with temps in the low 70s--the Army-Navy game helped keep down the number of people who came to the knoll this afternoon. Ours was one of only two memorials replaced there, so we had a steady stream of people coming to view it and speak with us about it.
All of us, including BufordP and FreeThe Hostages, held large American flags near the top of the knoll for passing motorists to see.
We'll be back there next Saturday.
(None of us had a digital camera with us today, so no pictures yet.)

The D.C. Chapter will keep this Saturday vigil at the Pentagon going for as long as D.C. Chapter members desire. Out of town FReepers and lurkers in good standing are welcome to meet us there from 2 p.m. until at least 4 p.m.

While talking with BufordP, I kept hearing the strains of bagpipes. I glanced over to the area closer to the Pentagon were a temporary fence has been set up to keep us civilians out of the construction area. There a lone piper was playing "Amazing Grace." A hush settled over the hill. When he was finished, he packed his pipes up and moved off smartly. It was an eerie and gripping moment.
To: Jimmy Valentine's brother
Nice job, DC chapter. I admire what you've been doing.
I would have liked to have heard the bagpipes. Very emotional moment, I'm sure.

You need to track down this piper. He's a FReeper, whether he knows it yet or not. And Free Republic could use a good bagpiper, wot?

Thanks for being there, everyone. I just couldn't get out of something else. Hope to be at the next one.
BTW, is anyone heading up into the land of the "Anti-Smoking Nazis" (Kensington) this afternoon? Anyone need a ride?
To: kristinn
