Since the first Pope was named Peter, it makes sense that the last should also be named Peter.

And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. (Matthew 16:18)

If you find this list credible (and it's not the sort of thing any Catholic is obliged to believe), there could be more intervening popes between JPII's successor and this hypothetical Peter. Alternatively, Peter may actually be the same as the last one listed, since none of the popes except him are named, and even in his case the name might be an allegorical reference to his office. Without a strong sign from God, would any pope venture to name himself Peter II?

Nevertheless, let's hope that the College of Cardinals doesn't do what it sometimes does after the long reign of a strong pope. Namely, pick a very old man as a compromise candidate, while they take more time to deliberate the matter. God's will be done, but the world needs another strong leader like JPII.

Malachy only gave motto's. So given that information, Petrus Romanus should be the motto of the last Pope, not his name. I believe Petrus means stone. So the last pope could be an Italian stone cutter or mason. Or the son of one.

These are a little vague, and should be taken with a grain of salt.

In related prophecies of years ago, it was said JPII would die in 2003 and the next Pope (Glory of the Olives) will not live out the decade, and that the beginning of the end of times will start around 2012/14 with Peter the Roman. Some say 12, others 14 but those two dates keep popping up (and then we had that meteorite scare for that same date). Someone claimed Peter the Roman would be a Pope of peace but be kidnapped from the Vatican and die in an Iraqi prison (timely, huh). Remember the seven hills of Rome (the Vatican) falling are to be the beginning of the end. Of course we still have the 1000 years of peace after this upcoming 12 year (?) world war (but the War on Terrorism could be it). The end time is supposed to be after the 1000 years of peace so there's still time to fill out your 1040 for 2003.

Not saying I'm a believer in this but Malachy had an impressive list and it's all pretty interesting. I'll worry when Walmart puts their handbaskets on clearance.

RE: And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. (Matthew 16:18)

If you look at the original text did Jesus mean to say to Peter that he was the 'Rock'? (Petros vs. Petra)

There are many questions regarding what Jesus said to Peter. Petra VS. Petros, Armaic VS. Greek, Protestant view VS. Catholic view etc...
If you perform a web search on Petra and Petros you'll find a wealth of information (and mis-information) on the subject. Was Peter designated by Christ to be the first pope or was Jesus saying you are, "You are Petros (masculine), and on this (the Revelation to Peter that Jesus was the Christ) Petra (feminine) I will build my Church.”
