The Prophecies of St. Malachy

PROPHECIES COME TO SCREEN

UNITED STATES distributors have pulled out of talks about a major new movie about an Irish saint who predicted that the world would end soon after the reign of Pope John Paul II.

The move comes against the background of the attacks on America and the bombing of Afghanistan.

End of Times will star top Hollywood actor Martin Sheen as a renegade monk who tries to head off disaster by blocking the election of a world leader.

The producer of the huge project says until recently the prophecies of St Malachy seemed 'far fetched'.

But Ted McDonnell of Orient West Pictures told us: "Now it has taken on a new sense of urgency."

Sheen, who starred in legendary Vietnam movie Apocolypse Now, plays a monk who tries to head off the appointment of the leader.

He believes that man would start the global war known in the Bible as Armageddon.

Said McDonnell: "Unfortunately the subject matter which seemed quite esoteric and far-fetched some months ago has scared off American distributors.

"Luckily though, the financial backing is European."

End Of Times was written by Limerick-born writer Justin Cleary.

It's based on the prophecies of St Malachy who laid down his warnings on a yellow parchment scroll in 1140.

Said McDonnell: "The film will juxtapose between the contemporary modern day and the dark ages in Ireland.

"We'll be filming in a monastic site in Co Kerry as well as modern-day Rome and various capitals throughout the world.

"A desperate Father Nicholas, a Dominican Friar, played by Sheen, tries to warn world leaders of the doom they are about to wreak upon the whole world."

St Malachy famously predicted the name of every pope since the 12th Century reign of Innocent II.

He was born in Co Armagh in the year 1094 into a wealthy chieftain clan.

He was a gifted speaker and became a monk before travelling the length and breadth of Ireland in an attempt to reform the church.

St Malachy feared it was subsiding into Pagan Celtic practices.

He also thought to do away with the custom of married monks passing on the priesthood to their sons. For his tireless efforts he was made Bishop of Ireland.

Later in middle age he made a 16-month pilgrimage to Rome.

On an early summer evening in Rome in the year 1140, whilst in the company of a band of Irish monks, he had a series of startling visions.

Bishop Malachy later wrote down the visions on yellow parchment in Latin and told his frightened companions that God had given him a vision of every pope to reign - after Innocent II - until the end of time when he said the world would be judged.

Before returning, Malachy presented Pope Innocent with a manuscript containing 111 prophecies.

The parchment remained largely forgotten in the Vatican's archives for more than 450 years, before a Benedictine historian uncovered the details of the pontiffs.

St Malachy accurately predicted the consecutive lineage of 52 popes. But after the current John Paul II there's only one more pope left to go before Judgment Day.

The producers of End Of Times are hopeful of having a hit on their hands and making a few dollars before time runs out.

"I certainly hope St Malachy got it wrong," joked Ted O'Donnell.

Well duh, even if the cardinals believed this hokus-pokum, it would be a simple matter to forestall the end of the world. Just don't elect as Pope any Italian named Peter(or Richard, for that matter). And for good measure stay away from any candidate connected with Rome, GA, Rhome, TX or The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone.

But then again, St. Malarchy may have hit it right. Say they do pick a Peter from Rome(BTW, I think that will be my new handle when calling in to talk shows), the panicked Italians may rise up and overthrow the Vatican.

BTTT.

Is that possible? I never figured out if bumping to the top is actual or symbolic, or simple a flagging mechanism for later self-search.

I think I may have shared in the Prophecies of St. Malachy, Requiescat in Pace:

On an early summer evening in Rome in the year 1140, whilst in the
company of a band of Irish monks, he had a series of startling visions.

You see, my brothers, I myself have the drink taken in the Holy City of St.Peter, in the very same prayerful company as that good and holy Saint himself, although at a somewhat later date. I also experienced strange, mystic visions until well into the next morning. Pope, or no Pope; my head felt as if it were truly the end of the world.

Alas, my strange glimpses into the future were of the athletic variety, not the cosmically religious. I saw, clear as the day, the Washington Redskins triumph in the Super Bowl. I confess, I took money intended for Peter's Pence and backed them to the hilt, complete with an accurate spread. Riggin's running won me enough to purchase a splendid (used) motor car.

And that's no Malarchy. Amen.

As far as Nostradamus goes, you are right. Very vauge quatrains that can be applied to many situations. Did you ever watch SCTV? They had a skit once 'The Life of Nostradamus, Mr. Know It All.' He got everybody mad at him because he 'knew you would say that!' etc. VERY funny!

St Malachi is real, but again, the list of popes names is really a list of slogans, and with a little imagination, culbe be applied to a wide variety of fulfillments.

I am sure someone with some imagination (and a lot of time on their hands) could take any 43 names in a row and apply them somehow to the US presidents, or even their own extended family tree.

I do belive in prophecy though - I just don't think stuff like this is very prophetic, and more of a challenge to future generations to use their imaginations.

Petrus Romanus - yep, it goes full circle. I think there has been only one Pope Peter, the first one, and out of respect for that, no other pope has chosen the name Peter.

If the pope after the next one selects 'Peter' then there may be circumstantial evidence to start sweatin! ;)

Good thoughts. Personally, I am a practicing Catholic and have never been interested in when the end times are coming (though I did say that God squeezing in a Mets-Yankees world series in 2000 was a sure sign that the end was nigh).

Let her rip, I say! I won't say I would be fearless, but I won't get faithless. With faith, and a good six shooter, what more does a man need but an ample bosom to rest his weary head upon? ;-)

God's will be done, I think I heard that somewhere.

I recently said the same thing about a potential Cubs-Red Sox Series. I thought it may portend something apocolyptic.

Looks like we dodged the bullet...

this time. :)

Thanks for the ping. No doubt this prediction is a strong sign of God. But God will never give the message in exact terms - so I know it's these days but I don't know which. It could be tomorrow. It could even be today.
BTW, Have your say : Is the papacy of John Paul II part of the apocalypse ?

The fact that they pulled the fil out doesn't mean that for sure the world would end soon after the reign of Pope John Paul II.
it's actually the other way round. And no I don't mean LONG after ...
