Supporters of campaign finance legislation gained the support of two more lawmakers Monday in their drive to force the bill to the House floor, leaving them only nine shy of their goal.
Reps. Frank Wolf, R-Va., and Cynthia McKinney, D-Ga., became the latest lawmakers to sign a legislative petition on the issue.
The legislation would implement the most sweeping overhaul of campaign finance laws since the Watergate reforms of a more than a quarter-century ago.
House GOP leaders scheduled the bill for debate earlier in the year, but the measure was abruptly pulled from the floor after lawmakers, on a vote of 228-203, rejected GOP ground rules for debate that the measure's supporters had attacked as unfair.
Several days later, supporters began their petition drive. A total of 218 names are required for the petition to succeed.
