Six years after Mike Braun came out on top in Indiana's first Trumpian Idol contest and won election to the U.S. Senate, he has coasted to the Republican nomination for governor.
It shouldn't have been quite so easy. On paper, Braun faced one of the most competitive statewide fields in Indiana history. At least three Republican contenders β Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, Brad Chambers and Eric Doden β had plausible cases to make for being stronger candidates than Braun.
Braun is an uninspiring U.S. senator who ran an uninspiring gubernatorial campaign. That turned out to be good enough because Braun had what he needed: name identification and former president Donald Trump's endorsement. That's probably going to be good enough for him to win in November, too.
Braun's competitors, meanwhile, never distinguished themselves to a Republican electorate beholden to Trump. They ran vaguely hybrid campaigns anchored to time-tested establishment Republican values while sort of appealing to Trump fans, or at least trying not offending them, but never really making headway.

Braun has an 88% CR Liberty score, unlike 52% fellow senator Todd Young.
Braun should be a far more conservative governor than pantywaists Holcomb and Pence. THAT'S what the reporter fears.
Indy star, pff
Thank You Indiana! Get rid of the riffrats.
“time-tested establishment Republican values”
Pukeworthy.
The Reddit liberals HATE Braun. HATE. Just go to the Indiana subreddit.
Itβs no surprise that the Indianapolis Red Star would say heβs a bad choice.
Yeah the source makes that more than clear. Never has it been known to lean conservative or Republican. Thus, no surprise that they are unhappy.
Who is this Briggs dude?
“He rejoined IndyStar from Axios”

That probably tells you all you need to know.
Never trust a candidate who is not regularly attacked by the press.
After reading a couple of sentences, my conclusion is James Briggs is an asshole trying to pass himself off as a journalist.
He should look for employment on the west coast, he’d be a perfect fit for the lefties out here.
This article is just mind boggling but nothing new. Here’s an excerpt “Polling might recommend candidates pound away on soul-sucking campaigns of border, border, border...”
Gee, saving our country from invasion is popular according to polling but just too soul-sucking to ponder, so let them all in.
How retarded has the left become?!
πππππ
The Star has gone from a major midwestern publication to a strip mall back office rag.
Thoughts from other Hoosiers?
The Indianapolis Star does not even qualify for use as a fish wrapper.
He doesn’t have to move that far; just one state over to Illinois. he would fit right in with the Chicago Tribune or Sun Times.
Indianapolis Star is a commie rag.
It was mostly name recognition. When you have a large field the one people know will usually win. I personally voted for Crouch, and she came in second. Braun should win easily. And I think he’ll be better than the clown we have now.
Yep. I democrats are predatory and evil, and republicans are moronic and craven.
Of the primary contenders, Braun was the least pro-life, not my favorite. But now that he’s nominated, and a Republican, and has Trump endorsement, the demos are upset because: they want to destroy R party unity. Trump has said many times that demos work because demos “stick together” and Republicans don’t. The article is trying to create party disunity. In all these things, there should be a fight in the R primary, followed by R’s supporting the R nominee. Braun will cake walk to win in Indiana. D’s don’t like big R support, sniff sniff, so they are whining.
The Lt. Gov would have been nicer. I don’t like Braun either. His career could have been ended yesterday as a word to the rest of the game players.
