While climate change is in general increasing the ferocity and frequency of severe weather events, the same effects may not apply to the massive snow dumps that occasionally pummel the U.S. West.
The quantity of snow that falls during so-called “snow deluge” years — such as the big 2023 snow season in California — is on the decline, according to a new study, published on Monday in the Proceedings for the National Academy of Sciences.
“There’s a common narrative with climate change that extreme weather events are getting more extreme,” lead author Adrienne Marshall, an assistant professor of geology and geological engineering at Colorado School of Mines, said in a statement.
“But with snow deluge, we’re not seeing that’s the case,” Marshall continued. “Instead, what we’re seeing across the western U.S. is that snow deluges decline, too.”

All my life I noticed that we constantly set new record high and low temperatures. We set new high and low periods of rainfall and snowfall.
This is because we do not have a long historical record of such things.
So, this makes “climate change” an easy sell because every new record is now due to X.

Wait, what? We had a big 2023 snow season?
Yeah we did. Followed by another winter of above average snowfall. Still going on right now. People skiing at Snowbird and Squaw Valley (oh sorry, “Palisades”...how insensitive of me) right now.
Both of these years were completely UN-predicted and show that the hysteria people at NOAA and the so-called climate change propaganda camps were WRONG WRONG WRONG.
Alta had it’s highest ever recorded snow year. 950+” last year.

This year was no snow deluge like 2023 but the snowfall was pretty respectable.
California reservoirs are full.
The colorado basin reservoirs however will need many good snowfalls to return fill up.
