A group of Republican and Democrat senators, along with the United Steelworkers (USW), are calling on President Joe Biden to hike United States tariffs on imported aluminum to save American jobs.

In a letter to Biden’s Commerce Department Secretary Gina Raimondo, the senators warn that aluminum extrusion plants in the U.S. are at risk of being eliminated as a result of imported aluminum extrusions.

No. Democrat policies have cost us too much already. $15 dollars of gasoline barely moves the needle. Everyone, every union, every entity, every principalities, and power associated with the Democrat Party is pure evil. They care not for the average American.

20 years ago might have been the time for tariffs. Too late now.

I am completely at a loss.

When I see what Johnson did, with Schumer reportedly bragging to his colleagues about how easily Speaker Johnson gave Democrats everything they wanted and asked for nothing in return, the list of Republicans including people like Ted Cruz who voted for the package, I understand.

I understand how our forefathers felt about Taxation Without Representation.

I have spent time for the last several years getting involved in local politics, trying to do my part, and it feels utterly pointless.

I feel that everyone who is ostensibly on our side is compromised with blackmail, greed, or power, when they aren’t actually ideologically aligned fully with enemies of this Republic.

It is not a new feeling, but I feel now in a deeper and much more meaningful way that they are simply going to do what serves their own interests. I won’t stop fighting, but it does seem pointless, and so few of us.

Oh God...
The steel Nazis are at it again....
Let me explain how this works, and what is going to happen....
A load of aluminum bars comes in from China. The steel Nazis cry DUMPING, and the whole shipment gets put on hold while the investigation starts. In the meantime, the steel Nazis raise their prices.
10 to 18 months later, the fed finds no dumping. The steel is released for sale.
Then a load of plate comes in from Poland.....,......
Rinse and repeat

You are finding it hopeless at the local level as well ?

That’s the one area I have worked where we had some success.

I live in one of the bluest states, and the politics here is so far slanted to the left it is nearly impossible to make any inroads whatsoever.

We do have conservatives here, but it sure feels like spitting into the wind.

But I have to keep trying. I cannot surrender and just become a keyboard warrior, though it is an outlet for me.

I’m in Canada, and I live in a left wing area on the West Coast.

Nevertheless we were able to block a gigantic sewage processing plant and delay another (which was eventually forced by the Province). The plants were to be dumped in our area as the municipality seen as the least able to fight back.

What we haven’t been able to do is block or modify huge condo developments where the builder deliberately doesn’t build enough parking. The density is excessive for the roads to begin with, but these developers deploy platitudes about the “post-automobile” lifestyle, and the city council lets them get away with it because they are marketing it as “green”.

In the past, left wing councils would see developers not building parking as developer greed, and creating congestion in the neighbourhood, but now they redefine it as Woke, and permit it.

Long ago, a lady moved into our area; she had a Ph.D. from Columbia U., in education. She used that, to batter her way into disturbing what rural life was.

She effectively destroyed all the Angus cattle farming, by convincing the local government to increase taxes, in order to build the “middle school” of her dreams.

Bye to the farmers. But what is this? We wondered: Her new middle school that had no windows except for the admin office.

“Children are distracted by windows.”

Another invention of hers: The middle school had no solid interior walls between classrooms. A leftist commune thing.

This was the last location where my mother volunteered as a poll worker. (rlmorel - what you wrote)

Dear mother, brave mother, except for the leftward tilt of her friends and acquaintances who echo’d the lady with the Ph.D. from Columbia U., as they turned toward strident socialism - not the direction for mother.

She had enough of that socialist establishment that is full of “enlightenment” pretense and pride.

The son of the lady with the Ph.D. evolved into being the first drug pusher in the area. Fashionable. Also some time in the state pen.

The home of the lady with the Ph.D., she altered: So every window through which the world outside the house could be seen, was covered by a large piece of plywood (this is the ol’ pre-fiber-board days) - blocking the view.

There was no view of the outside world, from within the house, other than a three inch gap between the exterior wall and window frame . . . and the plywood sheets.

“So the light could be let in.”

Very, very “enlightened.” Lots of “equity” -ness in that, plus other Columbia U. communist additions.

Left-wing-bat-s’t-crazy: “The madness of those for innovations.” - around 70 A.D., by Flavius Josephus, a Hebrew fellow.

The one thing that has happened since the early 1960’s is that the credibility of elites, and elite institutions has plummeted.

Up to the early 1960’s people had trust in every institution : business, government, politicians, unions, churches, schools, universities, military, police, journalists, lawyers, courts.

Now, it’s over.

No-one trusts any of these. Not even the military, anymore.

The Left has captured every institution. But Left stupidity have destroyed the credibility and competence of these institutions.

And no-one credits Ivy League credentials anymore, either. Ordinary people scoff at nonsense from Ivy League elites.

I’m confused. Didn’t Trump already do that and the union went bonkers because they said it would kill US jobs? Another case of leftwing “unintended consequences.”

I was at a very low point last night, I try hard to be positive, but...they are making it most difficult.

I went to a town meeting in 2021, and one of the things they were going to pass was a rule that EVERY SINGLE ITEM that came before the Selectmen for action MUST have a component on “climate change” to be considered.

Well, I got up to say my piece, that when the people I elect are going to consider, as an example, the purchase of new police cars, I want the best performing, most reliable, lower cost, and most durable vehicles that can be purchased. I don’t want decisions about the acquisitions made on the basis of reducing CO2 emissions and buying electric police cars (which was what was behind the issue of the “rule change”). I went on to say I wanted a town government that attended to the conditions of the roads in town, the quality of the town water, the collection of the trash. I noted that in my state, we had the fourth highest tax rate of all cities and towns in the state, and I wanted that burden reduced. In my opinion, one single minute spent by town officials, whose salaries I pay, debating climate change, is a one minute of my money wasted.

But it was almost all (but not all) women who got up after me and said that my outlook was selfish, and we had to do this “for the children”.

Yes. They said that.

I was appalled and disgusted. The measure to include the element of “climate change” in all discussions was passed.

I do feel like Sisyphus pushing that rock. But in this blue town, in the bluest of blue states, we count membership in our republican town council in single digits, but it is slowly growing, so...I can’t give up. I have hope, however stubborn and impractical it is.

That was an utterly depressing read. (not the way you retold it, but in the underlying reality of those who desire, obtain, and exercise control over the rest of us.

We just want to live our lives. They want to control our lives.

It makes me want to spit, reading that, because we have plenty of those people where I live.

Damn it.

I am sorry that the story of that lady “expert” depressed you.

The family that had lived in that farmhouse, moved to another, larger farmhouse (several boys in the family). One of the guys, was a friend for a long time. Very smart fellow who was reading and writing well - *in the 2nd grade.*

I was such a dunce, unable to write well; but I somehow knew that he was very good at reading and writing. His bedroom (an old, upstairs, outside deck-porch, converted) had stacks of books. Every time I visited, I would look at the covers and ask, “What’s this?” I did not understand how to write well.

I got “A’s” in grammar, but could not write an essay and almost flunked out of the 4th grade - yeah, sigh.

There was a fellow at Hillsdale College, who encouraged me to write (I was merely a friend of he college, not a student). Hilldale actually found me, a nobody trying to straighten out a problem. I had dared to object to some oddball, left-wing-nut developments at the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village Complex in Dearborn, MI. That put me on some mutual mailing list.

Anyway, I am accustomed to defending freedom from the leftists.

Bless you and yours. In my mind, I keep a memory of you and your gal, kissing near the WW-II statute.

It is never to late to save American industry. Tariffs work, they also decrease the deficit and promote domestic industry. We more tariffs now.

Sorry-didn’t mean to imply it wasn’t worthwhile-I just hate hearing it, because there are far more of those people out there who want desperately to control the lives of others than most people realize.

In the past, they would have been “busybodies” who could have been avoided.

Now, with the exponential growth of government, useless no-loads like that whose only function can be to damage something by laying their hands on it to exercise control over those things, and as a result...us!

And thank you for that kind reference to that statue in San Diego...a different time, indeed!
