A powerful volcano is erupting. Here’s what that could mean for weather and climate
CNN ^ | Apr 23, 2024 | Mary Gilbert, CNN Meteorologist

When Mount Ruang in Indonesia underwent multiple explosive eruptions last week, volcanic gases were flung so high they reached the atmosphere’s second layer, tens of thousands of feet above ground.

The force of Mount Ruang’s eruptions this week ejected an ash plume tens of thousands of feet in the air and sent some volcanic gases more than 65,000 feet into the air, according to satellite estimates – about 25,000 feet higher than a commercial airplane will typically fly.

The eruption’s potential impacts to weather and climate are starting to come into focus, even as the danger posed by the volcano persists and evacuations continue.

It’s possible for volcanoes to have a short-term impact on the climate – including global temperature cooling – due to the gases they inject high into the upper atmosphere. But Mount Ruang’s influence on the climate will likely be minimal, according to Greg Huey, the chair of Georgia Tech’s School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.......

An eruption as large as Mount Pinatubo in 1991 could certainly cool the planet for a few years, though it wouldn’t be able to erase the Earth’s current climate woes caused by planet-warming pollution, and it would come at the cost of tremendous damage to life and property.

Notice there is no mention of the amount of cardon dioxide released by this volcano as it might confound the Earth’s current climate woes caused by planet-warming pollution narrative.

Or methane, or the amount of real greenhouse gases, let alone their stupid carbon dioxide that they always blame for “climate change” even though it’s greenhouse properties are negligible.

A volcanic eruption is a REAL climate change event.

Too bad they can’t charge the mountain with a carbon tax. 😉

“...though it wouldn’t be able to erase the Earth’s current climate woe...”

Five sentences it took to spread this fable from CNN, learn some astronomy fools. Some geology wouldn’t hurt also.

What is this supposed to mean? Don’t root for volcanos to stop ‘planet-warming pollution’? Of course volcanos can cause damage, what are we supposed to do to stop them?

We threw her into a volcano as a human sacrifice. The volcano threw her back out.

I think we need to educate the volcano on the serious damage it's doing, and accompany it on its journey toward being more climate-aware. /s

The. Mt Pinatubo eruption in 1991 dropped global temperatures by a degree for nearly a year. An eruption of the Tambura volcano in 1815 produced what was called the year without a summer in 1816. Global temperatures in 1816 fell by nearly a degree causing widespread crop failures and estimated millions of deaths. All the Herculean efforts to thwart CO2 emissions are predicted to change global temperatures by only a few tenths of a degree.
