It was a common scam that ended with an uncommon outcome, tragically in an Ohio driveway.
William J. Brock fatally shot an Uber driver because he wrongly assumed she was part of a scheme to extract $12,000 in supposed bond money for a relative, authorities said this week. Lo-Letha Hall was a victim of the same con, summoned by the grifters to Brock’s house to retrieve a purported package for delivery.
Brock later told investigators he believed Hall arrived to get the money the scammers wanted.
He is now facing murder charges, to which he’s pleaded not guilty. Hall’s family is grieving. And Uber is helping investigators to try to catch whoever was behind the attempted swindle.

I saw a video by a lawyer saying that the scammer probably couldn't be charged with felony murder, because under Ohio law it needs to be a violent felony or with threat of violence, such as robbery.
Maybe the Uber driver's relatives can sue Uber.
It is a problem when these scammers operating abroad are not prosecuted, so eventually things like this will happen.
My God, that is horrible!
Seeing the video, I’m not seeing how the guy could have reasonably thought this old lady who could barely walk was such a threat to justify shooting her, even if he truly believed she was a thief trying to steal money.
The dude is 81 years old, too. If I was in his shoes I’d be inclined to give all my belongings away to family members and cop a plea just to get three meals and a place to sleep for the rest of my days.
NEVER tell a taxi/UBER driver anything about yourself, your families, your business, your purposes, etc.
If the scammers are from India, forget it. The cops are paid off. Scambaiters have provided the police with real names, addresses and recordings of the scammers and they do nothing. Even when they do a raid, the scammers are warned ahead of time and are down for no more than a day.
They almost got my mom with a refund scam but she remembered my warning about these guys and got suspicious when they told her to install remote access software.
The scammer was threatening to kill him and said someone would be over to get the money. So it seems reasonable he would view her as a threat. Plus people, particularly that age, tend to view blacks people as criminals.
That shooter might not have been too bright and/or didn’t have good common sense, plus his mental capacity could be diminished.
The old man should have stayed inside amd called the police.
The shooter knew it was a scam. He should have hung up at the beginning, or if he wanted to play detective, let the driver go after getting her license plate number.
So, robbery = violent
Execution = not violent
Ok, I get it. (no I don’t) Execution is murder.
NEVER tell a taxi/UBER driver anything about yourself, your families, your business, your purposes, etc.
Because you should not assume that the driver is lawful and legit.
May 7, 2019, Dylan Lindsey entered the ASL Liquor and Market store in Downey, California and shot, and killed, the clerk, Cerritos resident, Gurpreet Singh.
May 10, 2019, Downey, CA Police Dept. detectives staked out an address in Maywood, CA, that was associated with Dylan Lindsey.
At approximately 2:00 PM local time, Alison Hart, Dylan Lindsey's on-and-off girlfriend, pulled up to the Maywood address, driving a gray Toyota Prius. She appeared to be alone, and waited briefly, then departed . . . followed by the DPD detectives, Paul Hernandez and William Kautz, in an un-marked vehicle.
That resulted in a Los Angeles County police chase: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoFu_eHlgio

She's definitely Hispanic. The front windshield looks like it might have an Uber/Lyft LAX placard on it. She might have basically been a hostage.
