They opened the box on a Sunday in late March, getting their first look at Asfan Mohammed since he departed India for Russia four months earlier.
He was better dressed than when he’d left – a black suit, white shirt, tie and shoes replacing the casual attire he’d worn when family and friends saw him off.
But he had to be buried in line with his Muslim beliefs, so his body would need to be prepared; the neat clothes removed.
...videos on YouTube about job opportunities in Russia gave Asfan new hope, and he contacted an employment agency, his brother said.
“He was going to work as a taxi driver or delivery boy in Russia – that process was on,” Imran said.
“Then a couple of days later the agents said there are vacancies for helper and security jobs in the Russian army. The agents assured him that this was the best job. They said he could get a Russian passport and national card within a year through which you could move around neighboring countries.”
...Asfan had paid more than $1,800 to the recruiters, who asked him not to speak to anyone, even his family, about his intention to travel.
...Russia has been sending thousands of foreign men to fight in Ukraine since Putin ordered the invasion.
Many of them are young men from South Asia, enticed by the prospect of steady employment and higher salaries in Russia

“ …enticed by the prospect of steady employment.”
Employed as a corpse- that’s permanent work.
We need more Muslims doing this.
That would have been the wise choice.
I don’t know what he is paying the military but that higher salary on average equates to $15,000/yr.
Sounds like Ukraine needs more Indians, let’s deport all of the Indians here to Ukraine. End H1B.
Ukrainian ping
Setting aside Ukrainian disinformation efforts about unpaid Russian troops, it appears the estimated 14,000 Nepalis fighting for Russia are getting paid regularly, and a king’s ransom by Nepal’s standards - up to $4K a month. And while the work in Ukraine is extremely hazardous, that’s more than a year’s pay in Nepal.
“The recruiters get very happy when Nepalis show up,” a former fighter said.
A one-year contract is signed and the men get a Russian bank account, where at least $2,000 monthly salary is deposited. Many fighters say bonuses were also given – and the longer they stay on the front lines, the more bonuses they receive. Some say they made up to $4,000 a month.
Several of the Nepalis who fought for Russia said they had received only brief training before being sent into combat.
Such a short training period before sending Nepali soldiers to fight “shows the desperation of the Russian government and their need for human resources on the frontline,” said Binoj Basnyat, a retired major general from the Nepali army, who now works as a strategic analyst.]
I’ll go with the truth is in the middle.
It’s not $0 and it isn’t four times the per capita GDP-
in the US paying $4K/mo or four times the per capita GDP=
over $300,000/yr.
I’m confident the real number is between $0 and $4K/month.
I guess East Asian manners and courtesies like asking “Would you like a squishie?” could not save him.
Nice find.
Found after my Prigozhin FR comment about mercenaries?
How much they make, to me, is only a part of the story.
I have heard since the beginning of this “SMO “ that Russia had what amounted to unlimited ammunition and equipment, plenty of manpower, money, and of course nukes
Today they are sending trucks with metal attached to send troops into combat, ww2 d-20 artillery instead of modern artillery, much of Black Sea fleet moved out of Crimea, Russian AD most serious threat to Russian aircraft, are no longer net exporters of weapons, but net importers, recruiting manpower from around the globe( I get it send them to the front rather than Moscow or St. Petersburg residents), national wealth fund rapidly depleting, ….
Interesting look for “2nd greatest military”
