I went for a tour at the Canadian mint.

I saw what looked like actual planks of solid gold.

Half inch thick, six inches wide, many feet long. On shelves. This by memory, from twenty years ago. Actual numbers are approximate.

This through multiple thicknesses of bulletproof glass, but still an impressive sight.
