Supreme Court conservatives appear skeptical of January 6 obstruction charge
CNN ^ | April 6, 2024 | John Fritze

The Supreme Court's conservative majority appeared skeptical of a charge federal prosecutors have lodged against hundreds of people who attacked the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

While the court’s three-justice liberal wing signaled support for the charge, the conservative majority raised a series of skeptical questions about its potential scope and whether it would criminalize other conduct, such as protests.

A decision against the government could reopen some 350 cases in which defendants have been charged with “obstructing” an official proceeding by pushing their way into the Capitol in 2021. The charge can tack up to 20 years onto a prison sentence.

Piling on charges has been a common tactic for federal prosecutors.

That’s how they keep their conviction rate up around 98 percent.

Just to keep hopes down. It seems like positive supreme court decisions are ignored or subverted while negative (toward conservatives) decisions are enforced with diligence.

yep! I have noticed the same.

If it is a liberal decision, it is a landmark new law that must be followed by all and never questioned. If it is a conservative decision it is simply ignored.

Skeptical of the J6 findings? You mean the records of which have been deleted, never to be examined or even seen again? Now what on earth would cause such skepticism? Weird.

“ Justice delayed is justice denied.”

Absolutely. Many people pled guilty to other charges because they were afraid of getting convicted of this charge under review. If this charge gets thrown out those to pled to anything else are sol.

If liberal justices are gung ho and conservative ones are not, what does this tell us....that there is no critical thinking here, just shoot from the him for your politics. Get rud of this body that voted to send slaves back to their masters and kill millions of babies in their mothers own wombs.

Just flip a coin.

You are exactly right.
The DOJ has already threatened that if the Supremes do away with this charge, they are just going to bring extra charges or stiffer penalties to add up to what it would have been with this charge. It has never been about Justice.

Shouldn’t the left by their nature be skeptical of such a charge?

Nobody can ever predict how the Supreme Court is going to rule on a matter. Not even lawyers who are there every day.

Consider the perspective that the “parading” prohibition applies to the Supreme Court itself. Would they vacate that level of control over their own branch of government?

“...whether it would criminalize other conduct, such as protests.”

The leftist judges really don’t need to be concerned about that.

Left wing protests and riots are usually unpunished, the folks are cheered on and then bailed out by funds supported by Democrats Vice Presidents and Senators, and if they are punished, the back of their hands comes out a little bit stingy. So they get an owie they can whine about on Tik Tok.

That leaves mayors, city police, da’s, fbi and the like free to swing from the hips against regular American protestors using obstruction of justice as a bat.

Nothing not to be skeptical about any of Trump’s trials they are as rigged as the election was.

Liberty has a better chance with less liberals in the courts.
