No country can defend Ukraine without spending ridiculous amounts of money and opening themselves up to the slaughter of thousands of troops.
Regardless of the implications for defense spending increases, international respect, etc. defending Ukraine is a losing cause. If we really want to strain Russian military resources we should give them the keys to Ukraine and have them worry about defending it.
