Maryland hasn’t elected a Republican senator in nearly four decades, but according to new polling, that streak could soon come to an end.

A Goucher College poll released Tuesday has former Governor Larry Hogan edging out either of his likely Democratic opponents.

In a hypothetical race against Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, 44 percent of respondents said they’d back Hogan, 40 percent said they’d vote for Alsobrooks, and 11 percent were undecided.

In a hypothetical race against U.S. Rep. David Trone, Hogan took 43 percent of respondents, Trone took 42 percent, and 10 percent of respondents were undecided.

"What our results show effectively is that Hogan is still quite popular among Marylanders," explained Maleah Kromer, director of the Sarah T. Hughes Center for Politics at Goucher College. "Moreover, almost everybody can rate Larry Hogan," whereas statewide name recognition could be more of a challenge for the Dems...

Hogan is no Trump supporter, but a pawn takes a rook any day of the week

He’s no Republican. Might as well has a RAT instead of a Repuke.

I would guess that he is a step better than a Democrat. Plus it might help the Republicans regain control of the Senate.

Manchin represents West Virginia. He does not always vote with the Democrats every time. But Schumer gets his vote for the majority in the Senate. We'll get that with Hogan.

It's smart politics for Hogan to trash Trump. He's in Maryland.

I like Alsobrooks. She’s smart, an effective leader of that bag of cats and rats that is the Prince George’s County Council, and more honest about her politics than Hogan. She’s a budding star in Maryland, but doesn’t have the old Dim network backing her. They still like the squishy Thone, just because he’s rich and pliable.

That said, I hope Hogan wins, but no one should be surprised when he ends up voting with the Dims often.

If these are the true numbers he’s probably toast...not that he’d be any real prize. Plenty of Democrats to “come home.” That 44% is probably accurate for the support he will end up getting...he’ll do better than a Republican typically would have done but still lose.

Yep. And I don’t mind one little
Bite he’ll probably campaign on the notion that as an R in the Senate he’ll be in a position to be a check on Trump. I invite the R candidate in NM to make the same argument

Hogan’s opponent is being protected by the democrat eneMedia. Just weeks ago, as a sitting US representative, during a committee statement, Trone used the word “j!ggaboo” - LINK

Any republicans uttering that word would have already been forced to resign from Congress and stop his campaign for the Senate. For Trone, it has been coordinated silence among all media.

Plenty of Democrats to “come home.”

See post above about Trone’s ‘J-Boo’ comment - that’s gonna turn off a significant demographic in the RAT party … they may not even bother to show up

Better a Democrat. He’d want to live up to his father’s rep and he’d be on all the Sunday shows trashing Trump as a Republican from 1/21/25 onhttps://www.smh.com.au/world/north-america/a-very-bad-blow-the-first-republican-to-support-nixon-s-impeachment-20190930-p52w31.html

He’s definitely not a conservative. The guy is RINO central. But he was not a bad governor and he did a few things right. He’s preferable to either of the Democrats.

Trone has been running campaign ads since last fall, and Hogan is still slightly ahead of him.

The Republicans haven’t had their primary yet, so though Hogan may be the favorite, the nomination isn’t his yet. Any Maryland Freepers know if there’s a MAGA Republican worth supporting in that race? Hogan has some very shady associations from his past that go beyond the usual RINO baggage. For an interesting discussion on the topic, have a look at this video, starting at the 35:25 mark.

I think Hogan would be good, however, we need to make sure we will win Ohio, Montana, Arizona, Nevada and West Virginia.

“He’s no Republican. Might as well has a RAT instead of a Repuke.”

By electing him instead of the Democrat, the Republicans have a shot at the majority in the Senate which means running committees and freezing out Democrats. The “half loaf is better than no loaf” theory applies here. Now, how he votes is another thing entirely.
