Populist Peter Pellegrini has been elected president of Slovakia, succeeding the liberal Zuzana Caputova.
Mr Pellegrini, 48, defeated the pro-Western Ivan Korcok, a former diplomat, with 53% of the vote.
A former prime minister, he is an ally of Prime Minister Robert Fico, and shares the PM's dovish attitude towards Russia.
Mr Fico and his allies now control Slovakia's parliament, government and soon the president's office.

They always say “populist” like it’s BAD thing.
The opposite of populism is elitism, the ideology that asserts the governed are not qualified to choose political leaders from among their ranks and that the only legitimate political leaders come from an entitled, hereditary political class.

The elitists fool themselves and believe they have created a meritocracy, but when we hear that Gore and Bush just barely graduated from college after entering as legacies, then we know it’s not about merit.

Eastern European countries’ leaders have to start thinking about being nice with Russia and reconfiguring to please the Bear. They see that the USA is a perfidious ally apt to stab them in their backs . The Israel defeat by Washington demonstrates loudly that America will turn on them if it suits some loud minority in the American population.
