Burger King, In-N-Out and other chain locations in California raise prices after minimum wage increase: report

Prices for burgers, fries and other fast food items have increased at various restaurant chains across California, according to a recent report.

A New York Post investigation revealed that some fast food chains in the Los Angeles area raised prices on April 1, after new California statewide legislation went into effect Monday enforcing a $20 minimum wage for restaurants that have at least 60 locations nationwide, except those that make and sell their own bread.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the legislation, AB 1228, into law in September. In addition to the pay raises, it also establishes a "Fast Food Council," including representatives for both workers and employers, that can approve further pay increases and set standards for working conditions.

"The biggest leap was at a Burger King, where a Texas Double Whopper meal cost $15.09 on March 29 but surged to $16.89 on April 1, a whopping increase of $1.80 (nearly 12%) for the same meal," the Post reported.

"The Big Fish meal also jumped from $7.49 on the menu before April 1 to $11.49 after — an increase of $4 (53%)," the report continued. "Most other items increased anywhere from 25 cents to a dollar."

Hart House and In-N-Out Burger also saw price increases at certain locations.

However, the Post found that prices at Chick-fil-A, Wendy’s and McDonald’s did not rise, despite one McDonald's franchisee telling CNNBusiness that his restaurant has been affected by the minimum wage increase.

"As a business owner, when you’re dealing with this kind of extraordinary overnight change, you know, a 25% increase in wages,… (no) stone has to remain unturned," McDonald's franchise owner Scott Rodrick said. "And so we have looked at price, although I can’t charge $20 for a Happy Meal. My customers’ appetite to absorb menu board prices is not unlimited."

I guess people who are not dumb enough to pay ridiculous prices for unhealthy fast “food” will just learn to cook actual fresh meat and veggies-yes-they really do exist-and be healthy and not overweight as a bonus.

I stopped eating fast food in my college years, realizing that it was not a good choice of nutrition. I had the advantage of growing up on a ranch with fresh, organic meat and veggies right outside the door-but there is no reason for anyone not to know about basic healthy diet and nutrition-just go online for all the info you’d ever need...

He needs to learn to cook, or be able to afford a meal for two at a nice sit-down quiet restaurant with waitstaff, a full menu of prepared-to-order food, etc. I wasn’t ever impressed by a guy who took me on a burger-and fries date, and don’t know any woman/girl who was. A sit-down pizza-and salad place was okay until I was 18-but not after.

Guys who can cook are sexy-one of the reasons I married my 1st hubby was because he was a good cook, and we cooked together. We also camped and hunted together-I only like macho guys. Also-if the guy cooks, he has the girl/woman right there at his place-makes for easier private conversation and becoming more intimately acquainted if both are so inclined. You can’t do that in comfort in a vehicle with burgers and fries, or at the fast food place...

I live in California, where a $20 per hour minimum wage for fast food workers had just gone into effect. This has already resulted in restaurant closures, reduced hours, and higher prices.

Lucky you. We could only have a popcorn maker. I borrowed mother’s old one and it had a coil in the bottom so could use it as a burner. Hey, gotta think outside the box sometimes.

Yes, to the homecooking meal plan but it was only M-F. No fast food type meals. Our SS# was our ID used out in the open for meals and posted grades and no one thought to steal it. No one thought a thing about skin color until my senior year when we were inundated with Iranians who despised everything about the US so ruined the whole college experience.

Joe Biden decries the GREEDY store owners. Promises subsidies for all who still wish to eat in these 'restaurants' owned by rapacious moneygrubbers!

Remember when the VW Beetle sold for $1,999?

I bought my first car, a ‘74 Bug for $1,400. Drove it 8 years and put 150K miles on it. This was my ride through High School and college.

I don’t know what you drank. You didn’t say. You only said beer, which suggests it wasn’t anything special.

I stopped going to Burger King after they pulled ads from Rumble over its refusal to cancel Russell Brand.

Panera does not qualify for an exemption because Panera does not mix its dough at the restaurants.

The bread exemption is valid only for outlets that produced and baked bread as of September 15, 2023, and continuously since then.
