Western officials warn munition shortages could be catastrophic for Ukraine as US stalls on providing more aid

Ukraine’s shortage of ammunition and military equipment resulting from the US and its allies’ struggle to resupply the country’s military is having an increasingly dire effect on the battlefield, US and NATO officials are warning, as Russia intensifies its attacks on Kyiv’s dwindling air defenses knowing that they likely won’t be replenished anytime soon.

The Ukrainian military is “experiencing shortages in air defense munitions, mostly in the medium to long range,” a NATO official said on Wednesday. “It’s not just that we know that. It’s that Russia knows that. So Russia is using drones and missiles in ways that are really explicitly designed to deplete Ukrainian air defense systems.”

Ukraine has been rationing its air defenses for about a month now, said another person familiar with western intelligence. The Ukrainians had limited systems to start with, including the US and German-provided Patriot systems around Kyiv, some S-200 and S-300 surface-to-air missile systems, and some older, retrofitted Soviet launchers that they have been using to fire western missiles like Sidewinders, this person said.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called the battlefield situation for Ukraine “difficult” and “serious” on Thursday. He said that NATO foreign ministers who met this week in Brussels agreed to check their countries’ inventories to see if they have any additional air defense systems, particularly Patriots, that they can share with Ukraine.

But Ukraine is running out of munitions for their air defense systems quickly, and the US will not be able to resupply them until the administration secures supplemental funding from Congress. Last fall, the administration asked Congress for more than $60 billion in additional funds to help support Ukraine, but more than 6 months later the funding has not passed amid opposition from Republican lawmakers.

It's not about ensuring that the Ukraine is fully armed ... it's about bringing the United States to the brink of being fully disarmed.

Just launder 60 more billion dollars through Ukraine and everything will be OK.

The war is already catastrophic for Ukraine. All that sending more munitions to Ukraine will do is increase the death and destruction and prolong the inevitable collapse of resistance . The only option for Ukraine is immediate entry into negotiations to stop the conflict backed by US and NATO

It’s the proverbial “kick the can down the road.”

Ending this now would look like failure for NATO, the Biden administration, some EU leaders that got behind this.

Better to let the next guy deal with it. Have him take the egg in the face.

What’s 30,000 or more dead? Not our dead. We like the construct we have: https://www.facebook.com/RevolutionIreland/videos/senator-lindsey-graham-who-has-been-up-to-his-tits-in-ukraine-since-2016httpsrig/1218472818909921/

Russia appears on track to produce nearly three times more artillery munitions than the US and Europe, a key advantage ahead of what is expected to be another Russian offensive in Ukraine later this year.

Russia is producing about 250,000 artillery munitions per month, or about 3 million a year, according to NATO intelligence estimates of Russian defense production shared with CNN, as well as sources familiar with Western efforts to arm Ukraine. Collectively, the US and Europe have the capacity to generate only about 1.2 million munitions annually to send to Kyiv, a senior European intelligence official told CNN.

You might want to think about making peace while you still can.

Never mind air defense rounds.

There are not enough 155mm artillery rounds anywhere, apparently, to keep up with ukie use rates.

You might want to think about making peace while you still can.

I'm afraid at this point, Zelensky is going to have to throw a big bone. I think Odessa. That should satisfy Putin.

Otherwise, the Russians will continue the war of attrition.

The Confederates lost that one. So Zelensky shouldn't follow that playbook.

And there will be “peace in our time”. To quote Neville Chamberlin

But for millions of Ukrainians it will be the peace of the mass grave.

Just like what happened in Cambodia in 1975 when “peace was given a chance” and the communist Killing Fields began.

“””””Amen! WE have given our ammo away. China and Russia have noticed.””””””

China and Russia have probably noticed all the refurbished and new ammo factories that America and our
European and Pacific allies have and are building, along with the new contracts and massive increases in military budgets, along with our new bases and greater cooperation and relationships.
