Kremlin says Russia and NATO are now in "direct confrontation"

Russia and NATO are now in "direct confrontation", the Kremlin said as the U.S.-led alliance marked its 75th anniversary on Thursday.

NATO's successive waves of eastern enlargement are a fixation of President Vladimir Putin, who went to war in Ukraine two years ago with the stated aim of preventing the alliance from coming closer to Russia's borders. Instead, the war has galvanised NATO, which has expanded again with the entry of Finland and Sweden.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters: "In fact, relations have now slipped to the level of direct confrontation."

NATO was "already involved in the conflict surrounding Ukraine (and) continues to move towards our borders and expand its military infrastructure towards our borders", he said.

If VP Biden and Nuland and Co. had been willing to let Ukraine stay neutral, and not be pushing for it to join NATO, it is very possible none of this would be happening.

Stop deluding yourself. THIS IS NOT ABOUT NATO! It is about Putin wanting to restore the old imperial Russian borders. For years he has been openly declaring that Ukraine is not a real country, that it is really a part of Russia. In Putin's mind Ukraine is an invention of anti-Russian western powers and it is his intention to correct "Lenin's mistake" and return Ukraine to Russian control. All of his other excuses are just that: excuses.

In case you haven’t noticed, the US is being invaded by criminals and terrorists from all over the world. Our sworn enemy Mexico is assisting in out destruction.

You consider Ukraine’s borders to be more important than America’s borders. That is extremely offensive. Many Americans are beyond sick and tired of dictator Xiden stealing money from the American people and giving it to Ukraine.

Screw Ukraine. I’m sure you are Ukrainian, because I only see your name on the Ukraine threads.

You do realize that you are championing a man and a government which uses it’s military to ban religions, imprison priests, ban a free press cancel free elections and slaughter it’s own citizens——————don’t you? Are you willing to sacrifice our country and instigate a world war to satisfy your sense of moral superiority?

You consider Ukraine’s borders to be more important than America’s borders. That is extremely offensive.

What is extremely offensive is assuming support for Ukraine equals disregard for the U.S. border. If you would look at my posting history you would see that I am not for open borders. I think that we should close the border, eliminate the misused claim of asylum, deport all illegals, and require e-verify for employment and housing. Good enough? We can control our borders and support Ukraine at the same time. Cutting off support for Ukraine would not add a single cent to U.S. border security.

I’m sure you are Ukrainian, because I only see your name on the Ukraine threads.

Then you are not looking hard enough. I have been posting here on Free Republic for many years on a variety of threads. I hate to disappoint you but on my father's side I am of Italian heritage and on my mother's side the family has been in Virginia since the 1600's. But personal attacks are the go-to of those who do not have a rational argument.

I am not support a person or government but the Ukrainian people. They have the right to be free regardless of its government. (BTW, I do not accept your characterization of the Ukrainian government.) And what about your support for Putin and his invasion? And do not dodge this by saying you just want us to stay out of it. To refuse to give Ukraine the support it needs and that we can easily afford is to support Putin.

Are you willing to sacrifice our country and instigate a world war to satisfy your sense of moral superiority?

The meager support that we are giving Ukraine is hardly sacrificing our country, nor will it start WWIII. Appeasing Putin, on the other hand, might. The instability in Europe created by a Putin victory could lead to further conflicts. Have we learned nothing from WWII? The way to prevent another world war is to stop Putin now by giving Ukraine enough support so that he understands that he cannot win. Then by giving him a graceful way to back off.

Leave nato as is, and pull US out. We don’t have the ability to continue bankrolling a bunch of eurotrash who don’t believe they should pay for their own defense.

US Has wayyyyyyy bigger problems then Russia at the moment.

Russia’s population peaked in 1993 at 148.6 million. At the start of 2022, it was estimated at 145.6 million.

It's not the same Russia now, and yes I do know history, and I was overseas 3 years in USAFE, in a work center that studied the Russians. The Russians have land and no people to replace the loss, and a very low birth rate.

The other factor is the rank and file Russian Conscript wants no part of fighting Ukraine.

This all with a loss of 500,000 Russian Troops up to now.

Where is the original source for those figures?

Of course it's not the same Russia now. They are no longer a commie nation, or do you have sources on that too?

If any person in any country these days wants no part of any war anywhere in this world today, they should be patted on the back, instead of choosing to be cannon fodder in another proxy war.

The fact that NATO has failed for years to force other NATO countries to provide for their own defense as part of the NATO structure, and still hasn't, makes it a useless, unprepared entity. They are only now talking about forcing member nations to pay their fair share, something Trump told them in 2016.

Germany has consistently, since the 90's failed to invest in their own defense. And why should they have? They had U.S. troops stationed there since the Cold War. There are still approximately 50,000 U.S. service members there. As recent as February 2022, Germany promised to increase their defense spending. They pledged to create a 100 billion euro supplemental defense fund. This increase meant that Germany would finally reach the 2% of GDP defense spending target set by NATO after many years of spending less than 1.5% of GDP on defense. However, in August of 2023, Germany removed that pledge, and said they would now instead reach it over a 5-year period. And what has NATO done about it? Nothing.

How many other NATO members have failed to build up their own defenses as required, and how has NATO handled those? Likely as bad a they have Germany. NATO has relied on the U.S. to keep it afloat. It's time to get rid of this albatross on the back of American taxpayers. Europe needs to protect itself for a change. We are not the policemen of the world. We saved Europe's ass twice. Third time is not the charm. Russian and Ukrainian are their problem, not ours.

If they pushed for a peace deal. NATO and Russia can claim victory. Russia takes over space in Ukraine. And Nato expanded right on Russia’s borders via the 2 nations that have been approved to join.

ANd screw ukraine. They are giving bribes to Biden all the time.

"Enough with the ridiculous lie that the war in Ukraine is about western globalists enriching themselves. This is a war for Ukrainian independence against an expansionist Russia. Are you willing to sacrifice the Ukrainian people to satisfy your sense of moral superiority?"

The why are we not fighting in Armenia? Why aren't we securing our own border from an invasion of illegal aliens that is ow 50 million strong? Why are we not actively deposing Turdeaux in Canada.

Every Freeper that backs this monstrosity of a war and the plundering of America should just go away to DU. They are a plague.

I have “sources” that shall not be named. The stats on losses can be discovered in other internet sources and Putin is embattled now. The Russian Military is now proved to be inept, and not up to the mission. In anycase, what’s the point, Ukraine will take billions and billions to rebuild on the east side. Putin wins nothing by winning.

US manufacturing is not producing weapons on a war footing while Rusdia’s are. The Biden Admin has three conflicts(Ukraine, Israel vs Iran and Taewan) which could start WWIII. China is looking for an opening to move on Taewan.

Iran moving its ballistic missiles for a massive strike on Isral would spark a regional war that would spread - Turkey and Iran are working together.

The future is not as rosey as the Biden Admin thinks it is.
