Good deed gone bad: Squatter sues Atlanta property owner who allowed temporary free stays

An Atlanta property owner is frustrated after he says people have been living on his land without permission for years.

David Morris, who now lives in California, says squatters have been living on his southeast Atlanta property since the pandemic, and it's been quite an ordeal getting them to leave.

However, according to his attorney, David Perrie, they were granted Writ of Possession on March 21.

Morris says he now plans to install fencing to keep unwanted visitors out. Meanwhile, he says he was contacted by code enforcement to clean up the property.

"It's frustrating that I'm having to spend so much money. I spent $10,000 on cleaning up garbage from vagrants," Morris told FOX 5.

His nine acre property is the site of his former nonprofit, Lakewood Environmental Arts Foundation (LEAF).

He said about 10 years ago, he started letting four people live on the property rent-free if they helped care for the land. However, during the pandemic, he closed the nonprofit and noticed even more people staying on his property.

We live right under the centerline of the April eclipse. Lawyers and local authorities are warning the local yokels that if they are going to deal with the mobs of “eclipse visitors”, the first thing they better do is hire a lawyer. People better listen to them.

If he had done his homework he would have known how such charity can turn against one. In the eyes of the law “temporary free stays” translates to “Short term lease.” Though without a contract there is really nothing to prevent the “tenant” from claiming a long term agreement.

Once you permit somebody to stay in your home (or other property) and a dispute arise over them refusing to leave you will find you are now considered a landlord and eviction proceeding are required.

Write laws in legislature making ‘squatting’ against the law. When that’s done cops can arrest squatters.

This issue NEVER should have been put under ‘landlord/tenant rulings...

Write a law and the ‘problem’ is solved.

Just tell the cops they’re trespassing.

tell the cops they’re trespassing.

Not strong enough. Plus there are complications - there has to be a sign warning trespassers - and that sign could also keep police and fire departments from helping in an emergency..

We have legislatures to WRITE LAWS for citizens - not just to assist large companies with making their profits better. The solution?

Write a new law.

When that's done cops can go in and arrest the squatters. . This is a no brainer,.

I got hundreds of emails in 2017 asking to allow people to camp out on my property to see the eclipse. Airbnb, harvest hosts, and all sorts of the RV forums I go on. People were paying crazy amounts just to stay.

I said HELL NO! I probably would have been fine because it was all pre pandemic democrat run BS.
