Schumer noncommittal on House-passed TikTok ban
The Hill ^ | 03/13/2024 | ALEXANDER BOLTON

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Wednesday the Senate “will review” the House-passed bill that would force TikTok’s Chinese owner to sell the app or see it banned in the U.S., but he stayed firmly noncommittal about bringing the legislation to the floor.

The legislation passed the House with an overwhelming margin, 352-65, earlier Wednesday and seemed to have strong momentum heading over to the upper chamber.

But Schumer made it clear he does not plan to rush it to the Senate floor, despite President Biden’s Friday statement saying he would sign a TikTok ban if it passes Congress.

“The Senate will review the legislation when it comes over from the House,” Schumer said in a short statement.

Shumer’s probably in China’s back pocket along with Quid Pro Joe.

Schumer’s kids are evidently execs at Fascist Book- they were talking about it here in NY this morning. Schiester will slow walk this to make it look like he’s concerned then push it through and his kids will get huge raises.

TikTok has a negative influence, but no worse than Instagram, Facebook or (still worse) OnlyFans. And it's good that TikTok exists to offer competition.

YouTube, especially, has lost viewers to TikTok, especially among young females.

I heard last night that his bill is trogan horse. It is not just about tick tock. It is going to give Biden the right to ban other websites as well. Someone better read the bill.

It will all come down to whether he thinks the U.S. government’s evil surveillance state can do a better job than China’s government’s evil surveillance state.

I’m not aware of any reason to ban TikTok.

The Communist Chinese have Amendment I rights too.

I personally find Facebook annoying. I want to see pictures of my neighbors’ grandchild and my sister-in-law’s dogs and not much else.

They want an American owner so the CIA can push tiktok to censor non Left speak, like FB does, it’s about control of information.

Waiting for the calls for Schumer to be “bi-partisan” and get this bill moving.

However, I expect [crickets].

It is a Trojan horse and a violation of the First Amendment. Any Republican who votes for it should be removed from office.

That is the function of the Senate, but I'm not sure that will be the case here, because it just provides the Democrats with another opportunity to acquire the functionality of the tool for their own use. So, I do not see this legislation as a win.

Had they banned TikTok completely, that would have been a win.

The title is incorrect calling it a ban, because that is not what has happened at all. If just tells then that they must divest interest in it. Now if they don't they perhaps it will be banned. If that happens, then they just took the backdoor approach with perhaps the thought that they would be against divestiture. It could turn out to be a positive, as they got some Democrats to vote for the .

But Biden will never sign it anyway.

Schumer again has to see if the millions of Chinese yuan renminbi have been credited to his numbered accounts.

Facebook organizes user data before selling it to China etc. FB is no better than tiktok. IMO worse, because FB tries to force users to upload government IDs.

Dana Loesch had some good insight to this.

I agree with critics that a ban does NOTHING to address the larger problem of the so-called ‘data vacuum’ and security for social media users.

And I share concerns that the bill she described grants far too much power to the executive.

Frankly, this tiktoc thing smacks of a bait & switch orchestrated by chyna and our government is following lockstep by gaslighting us all into granting them more control.
