Ukraine had four operating nuclear power plants in 2012. The Russians took one of them, the Zaporozhiya plant, in 2022.
The other three are still running.
The Russians have attacked electric transmission/distribution equipment on the grounds of the other Ukrainian nuclear power plants during the cruise missile offensive of 2022-23.

Zaporozhiya plant is on the south bank of the Dneiper. You should look at the geography there in relation to the Dneiper, as that is, under current circumstances, an insurmountable military obstacle.

What Putin has made crystal clear is that WWIII be started if that is the only way to prevent Ukraine from becoming an armed NATO base. If the NATO forces are deployed to Ukraine and Russia can’t prevent it conventionally, he will resort to whatever means is necessary to stop it. We can dance around CIA assessments, theater nukes, all of that but it does not alter the fact that we will be plunged into WWIII if that is Russia’s only option to keep NATO out of Ukraine. He has unequivocally stated this a hundred times. He, unlike the idiots in the West, does not bluff. You are correct in saying he never contemplated actually using nukes up to this point because he was has yet to be in jeopardy of losing conventionally.
