‘Harder than negotiating with the Taliban’: Can one man fix a Bay Area college’s toxic culture?
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | March 7, 2024 | Connor Letourneau

Mike Dumont guided his blue Porsche Cayenne down Maritime Academy Drive in late February, the last glimmers of sunlight shooting across the California State University system’s smallest campus.

Eight months earlier, when Dumont took over as Cal Maritime Academy’s interim president, he’d known he faced a difficult assignment: Diversify and grow what has been a homogeneous student body. But now, as he drove through the Vallejo campus, he understood the full extent of his challenges.

Once the highest-ranking openly gay officer in the United States military, Dumont, 63, served combat tours in El Salvador, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq.

Why does with who and how this fellow has sex have to do with his ability to be a leader. My son went to Cal Maritime. It is an academy dedicated to those who wish to have a career in the maritime industry. Usually young men with mechanical abilities and interests. There is no need for a multi cultural transgendered basket weaving course at this school.

If his goal is to expand enrollment and get more women enrolled, one assumes that producing able and competent graduates will get a lower priority. Then all he’ll have to do is convince the maritime industry to accept graduates with lower competence and ability but who will require higher pay and promotions because they contribute to the company’s DEI statistics. It’s certainly paying off in the airline industry.

Just a few weeks ago I saw a Top Ten list of USA universities with the highest median income for graduates.

Two of the top five, and three of the top ten, were Maritime universities!

The other seven were elite STEM universities, like MIT, or universities with elite business schools, like Harvard.

Combat tours in El Salvador and Pakistan?

Makes some sense if he was with the CIA.

Notice he’s too gay to drive the car, he can only sit there and try to “guide” it.

If he is 63, he is too young to have taken part in the Football War of 1969 between El Salvador and Honduras (which ended with no casualties if I remember correctly), and anyway there were no Americans involved.

Meagan Nance, who was hired in January 2023 as Cal Maritime’s first director of inclusion initiatives, has helped organize a Transgender Day of Remembrance ceremony, a Pride Summit to develop LGBTQ leaders and a graduation reception for LGBTQ students.

Sorry - can’t read article, appears to be behind a pay wall.

One of my daughter’s friends attended the Cal Maritime Academy - was learning how to captain large oil tankers and freighters.

Leaders have to be respected and trusted, which tends to exclude gays and trannies in the closed and strongly male environment of shipboard life.

I would think ship’s crews with gays and trannie officers would not be an efficient, well-run operation. Homosexuals seem to cause division and poor morale within any group.

(article from last July when Dumont was appointed interim president)

https://www.timesheraldonline.com/2023/07/07/dumont-starts-tenure-as-cal-maritime-interim-president/

“California State University Maritime Academy provides life-changing opportunities for graduates who go on to become leaders in the maritime industry and beyond,” said Dumont in the same news release. “Cal Maritime is at the forefront and leading by example in its work to strengthen diversity, equity, and inclusion across the nation’s maritime academies and help meet the needs of our cadets, grad students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds. I look forward to contributing to a campus where all are welcomed, respected, and empowered as they pursue their educational goals and professional aspirations with meaning and purpose.”

In the real world, corporations are ending DEI policies because they don't work, but in academia everything works - because it's not the real world and there are no consequences for bad decisions.

The institution has been doing just fine for 95 years without the DEI agenda.

I had occasion to tour there and go to a couple of meetings there in the 80s It was a model place. Wasn’t tied to Cal. Pity.
