‘We’re hemorrhaging money’: US health clinics try to stay open after unprecedented cyberattack

For more than two weeks, a cyberattack has disrupted business at health care providers across the United States, forcing small clinics to scramble to stay in business and exposing the fragility of the billing system that underpins American health care.

“We’re hemorrhaging money,” said Catherine Reinheimer, practice manager at the Foot and Ankle Specialty Center in the suburbs of Philadelphia. “This will probably be the last week that we can keep everybody on full-time without having to do something,” she told CNN. The center is considering taking out a loan to keep the lights on.

The cyberattack disrupted the computer networks of Change Healthcare, which serves thousands of hospitals, insurers and pharmacies nationwide. It prevented some insurance payments on prescription drugs from processing, leaving many care providers footing the bill up front and hoping to get reimbursed.

Don’t worry, the Federal Reserve bank funding program ends tomorrow.

That will help…

They’ll just find another backdoor way to fund them.

The financial “magic” show never ends.

Not related to cyberattacks, but its important to put that in the overall context of the the serious financial storm that is brewing for hospitals. This is soon going to be a widespread problem IMO.

Have you been in an urgent care clinic after, say, 1980?

I am not so sure that this is bad:

It prevented some insurance payments on prescription drugs

I don’t think that people or businesses have any idea how vulnerable the Internet is.

It looks like the software manufacturer or the billing service provider might be financially liable for the vulnerability to be hacked.

Consider options:
1) Get loans and hope for the best.

2) Wring hands and cry to the media, while waiting for Joe Biden to get jacked up on adderol again and do ... nuttin’

3) Confer with the insurance companies and Medicare/Medicaid, and get them to accept paper billing during the emergency. If the .gov agencies refuse, bring you Congressperson in on it. Process the bills on an unaffected pc or mac, print to your own printer (and/or make pdf’s or some other format the recipients can use), fax the results to the required recipients.

Is Door#3 a whole lot of trouble? Yes. Does it beat hemorrhaging money, going out of business, and failing the community? Yes. They need to shut up and get busy.

Its inevitable, right?

“I have no evidence to counter your conclusion.”

That’s because the Fed doesn’t allow itself to be audited. No evidence, no problems.

If there were such a thing the tricks and legerdemain that would be exposed would be too revealing.

But its all done in the ‘national interest’. /sarc

--- "NOTHING digital is 100 % secure."

Indeed. And yet we recall that the Obama team pushed for and got digitalized medical records into law, with some of the Democrats' crony friends cashing in thereby.

Skepticism in much is warranted.
