"Negligent acts" by armourer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, 26, led to Halyna Hutchins' death during the production of Rust, prosecutors told the court.
Ms Gutierrez-Reed's lawyers laid the blame at the feet of Mr Baldwin, who they argued violated basic safety.
Mr Baldwin, 65, is also charged over Hutchins' death on 21 October 2021.
Ms Gutierrez-Reed has pleaded not guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence over the fatality during the production of the Western in the US state of New Mexico.
During opening statements for the trial in Santa Fe on Thursday, prosecutors argued that the defendant's "unprofessional" on-set conduct led to an avoidable tragedy in which live ammunition found its way into a weapon.
"You will hear testimony that she routinely left guns and ammunition lying around the set unattended and her gun safe and ammo cart were constantly disorganised," special prosecutor Jason Lewis said.

They probably only offered to drop the tampering with evidence charge the jury acquitted her of if she pled guilty. Lame to plead not guilty and then not testify when prosecution was claiming she brought in live rounds which were mixed with dummy rounds.
This article discusses some of Baldwin's behavior. Presumably armorer couldn't stop star actor from doing that and/or was not backed up by management. I think Baldwin probably deliberately fired the gun at the victim to scare her, assuming it wasn't loaded. Seems like sort of fair if both she and Baldwin are convicted, but management (which was not Baldwin) was also responsible.
Diversity first and safety someplace else ?
"Hannah called me a bad name" is what was really noticeable...
and the fact that right after the shooting...she talked to Kenney and Baldwin...several times...but seemed to ignore contact with the police
and the fact that right after "Alec killed the lady"...the prop master threw out some shells...and never told anyone...for weeks...
And the fact that she accidently discharged a gun...which she should not even been handling...
And if you saw the clip of Alec in the scene where he comes out of the building and fires his gun erratically...I mean like he was nuts...
Think about it....that live shell had to be in the right chamber to be the next shot out. Did Alec himself...make sure it was in the right position...he had time to manipulate it.
Otherwise the odds were with the lady he shot.
If anyone had followed any ONE of SEVERAL firearms safety protocols this event would never have occurred. It occurred not because of a single mistake, but because of a culture of carelessness and disregard. Ultimate responsibility must attach to Mr. Baldwin, who covered a human being with the muzzle of a firearm and pulled the trigger for absolutely no good reason.
She got the job largely because her father, Thell Reed, is a legendary film armorer who worked on “Tombstone,” “3:10 to Yuma,” and “L.A. Confidential,” among many others. He pulled strings to get her her first gig as head armorer.
THat one clip...he was crazy...shooting all over the place...with total disregard...and then ordering Hannah...hurry up hurry up..
Also...I believe she was supposed to be called to the church for the scene...but they didn't call her.
And I can't give an inch to Alec...his father taught riflery for years and I imagine Alec and dad went to the range all the time.
Everything about her screamed sloppy, her pudgy, sloppy body, her sloppy tattoos, her sloppy hair, her ill-fitting sloppy clothes, her puffy doper/party face and eyes.
Those of us who know dedicated gun people know them to generally be almost anal about gun details and precision, nothing about her was well put together, even her photos with holsters and guns seemed sloppy and ill-fitting, those photos just don’t look like someone from the dedicated gun world, she comes off as awkward and out of place.
Plus the fact that she had to split her duties between being the Head (and only) armorer and Head Property Master. So she was responsible for Colts and break-away whiskey bottles.
More like a non-rich patsy, sacrificed so someone goes to prison and Baldwin walks.
New Mexico is typical Democrat hell hole. The rich and politically connected can do anything.
That’s why Epstein’s ranch was there.
If you can find the testimony of the Prop Master...I think her name is Sarah...You may see what I see....A vengeful sort...more than the usual Cat fight mentality.
The fact that the Prop Master threw out shells after the shooting...and told no one...until they were untraceable and after her talking to Kenney (bullet supplier) and Alec several times right after the shooting....drives me nuts.
rosecutors argued that the defendant’s “unprofessional” on-set conduct
and nobody thought to fire her and hire someone else
I think the Prop Master and Alec’s outrageous actions were 100 times worse than Hannah’s (supposed) conduct. No one had a problem with her except Sarah...
“Gutierrez-Reed’s lawyers laid the blame at the feet of Mr Baldwin”
Throw the boss under the bus/chuck wagon.
It takes maybe 30 seconds to clear a revolver or check its load.
Mr Baldwin should have had the discipline to check it himself. It’s part of respecting the weapon.
There’s no need at all for live rounds to be on a movie set.
There’s really blame all round in this case.
Almost every job on a major movie set has a union contract.
Maybe an independently financed film is exempt?
On the other hand, many film related union contracts forbid members to work with other non-union labor.
Obviously, I am not an expert, but I would be surprised to hear that life long Democrat Alec Baldwin was NOT paying union wages on his film set.
Prop Master Sarah Zachry’s testimony reveals that she had been an armorer once for a movie yet doesn’t own guns and has never fired a gun.
This court video is revealing and interesting.
Sarah was given total immunity “as long as she testified against Hannah” See the link after this.
