A New York City couple’s plan to move into a $2 million dream home to retire in with their disabled son has become a “nightmare” as they battle a squatter who claims he had an agreement with the previous owner.
Susana and Joseph Landa, both 68, purchased the home next to family members in the quiet New York City residential neighborhood of Douglaston, Queens, in October 2023, ABC 7 reported.
Close to relatives, the location was perfect for their son Alex, who has Down syndrome and could be easily looked after if something was ever to happen to the couple.
“I just want to know that I can die tomorrow and he’s next to his brother,” Susana Landa told the outlet Wednesday.

...and who did you vote for last election?
Don't call the cops.
Correct. There are always problem solvers who can handle this for a fee.
Not getting the squatter thing.
There are a million terrible things you can do to someone you don’t want on your property... including but not limited to bashing his skull into lots of small pieces.
If you, somehow, can’t physically harm them or any family members, there are countless ways to just fk their world up and have them praying they never saw you.
Sue the previous owner for $583 million for misrepresenting the property as habitable. It’s all the rage these days.
Sue the crap out of the previous owners for not disclosing that a squatter was living in the house and they can't get rid of him.
Oh, and New York, change this stupid, stupid law.
Fuhgeddaboutit.
Sometimes they will work for free...............
Spend $500 on some local muscle...problem solved.
We got rid of a possum that took refuge under our deck in a far corner a few years back. Hung mothballs and played mariachi music all day and night. Only took a couple of days. I imagine you could use similar techniques to get rid of the squatters, but I’m not sure. It would be worth the try.
In New York it will take them 10 years to get him out. By that time they will have spent a million in legal fees and the house, destroyed by the squatters, will be worth $50,000.
Dont have time to read the story...so maybe they did...but if they didn’t it seems like step one when it comes to potentially buying a home...is seeing if it has a squatter in it.
And if the answer is “yes” do a 180.
No longer part of civilization. Build a wall around it like in that movie.
Full disclosure: I was born and raised there. Got out in the 1980s. "Tough on crime" Giuliani was just a speed bump at best.
Go to all the utility companies and prove ownership. Have all utilities shut off. Hire a window and door company to come and remove ALL windows and doors and store them elsewhere. A few days they will be gone.
Anecdote time....
Many years ago my wife and I were looking for a house to rent.
We responded to a classified ad and were given a tour of the house by the owner.
It met all our needs, the location was great and the tour was about to end.
I saw a door that the owner had not opened—and I asked the owner what was behind the door.
“The other renter” he said. “The other renter is a really great guy.”
I gave the owner my best Charles Manson stare and pulled my wife out of there.
:-)
I’m also wondering why the family members living next door didn’t notice the squatter and say something to the homebuyers.
The GOP should run an ad about this non-stop. But they don’t actually want to win.

Illegal in many jurisdictions.
New York.
